That is AWESOME. How do they make it look like etched glass? How do they smooth the cuts? Is that what the boiling pot is for???

I think you just answered your own question there. I believe I saw something about how they do this before and it was that they took the boiling/hot water and ran it across the edge so that it melted it and thus smoothed it.

I have actually seen this ugly <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> POS somewhere.

I do not know where and I do not recognize the area. It is hard telling with my job where I spotted it though.

I believe you are correct. That looks to be from the annual Ice Festival in Sapporo, Japan. Really, really cool thing to see. I was there in '94. That is by far the cooldest friggin place I've ever been. I'm getting chills just thinking about it. The ocean breeze on the foc'sle was horrendous, even in our cold weather gear and NO exposed skin. Anyway, I digress.

Cool pic! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

First of all it's in Fairbanks www.icealaska.com
We DO get Japanese guests...

Texturing is done in many ways. Regular handtools that have been modified are the norm.

Pot of water might be for layering, but is also used to make a slurry of snow 'glue'.

Most VERY glossy surfaces are done with either an iron or a blowtorch or weedburner.

-31F when these were posted. That's without wind.

When 'TIME' is called, the judges look at the works with only white lights. The colored ones adorn them later.

My bad...

Please accept my apologies if I brought discredit to Fairbanks...

Anyway, the art is spectacular just the same and I am a fan (now of BOTH places)...
