Welcome!

As you can see, we're quite a friendly bunch here.

As far as those codes...
KM148 is the tranny designation I believe.
G54B is the engine designation I believe.
4625 is your R&P gear ration (4.625:1)
Not sure about the rest though.

From what I know about these rigs...
In the US, the 88's only came with a 2.6L I4 carburated engine. The carburator is made by Mikuni. Vacuum lines at this age will go bad and require replacement.

Secondary won't open because of these bad lines & you'll experience less than stellar acceleration and power out of your engine.

One thing you should do is check that all lube points have been regularly lubed. There are numerous Zirk fittings underneath that most lube places will miss simply because they don't see them or don't expect the mitsu to have so many. Here's a diagram from an 89 factory manual showing it's lube points. Yours should be very similar...
[Linked Image]

This should get you started.

If you really want to go banana's, we have quite a few who have done rebuilds on these engines & tranny's so just ask.

Re: Your plate under the hood:

The first line indicates the vehicle model and model series.

The fourth line indicates the color, trim level and options.

Thank you! I really want to go bananas but would probably end up divorced. Switch in roles, huh? Hubby is not much of an enthusiast. She sat up for about six months last year but I got her running again back in November. For an office gal, I really don't mind getting my fingers greasy. Hate the busted nuckles that always happen though. I think I have my first project to tackle on her. Thanks guys. This is going to be fun (I know, I know) frustrating, too!

If you have a little free time, and the means to do so, I say the absolute best training a person can get if they are serious is to dismantle one. Up this way in the rust belt, you can happen across ones that are ragged out from the salt, have a blown head, and various other sundry issues. The last one I got was for $75. Find one of those and just start in on it. As you do so, keep thinking "what is this supposed to do and how is it supposed to do it."

And always post back here with questions!

Welcome... (We are nice, but even nicer to the fairer sex. Not that we'd try to scam on you, it's just nice to see you here and interested. There are a few others as well. Many are there of us who wish our wives were interested. Then again, we're sometimes happy they aren't! )

Yeah, it's a father and kids thing around my place...

IIRC, there was one of us a little while back who was ready to drive out and kick some a$$ on someone who was hassling a female member of the board.

Be nice - I share an office with one of those Jeep guys they aren't soooo bad. Actually back in 1988 when I was shopping I thought I wanted a Jeep and looked at those first. Too expensive the way I wanted it rigged. Then I happened upon the Raider. Geez was someone steering me in the right direction. I'm still going to write Mitsu USA in California and see why they don't market the Pajero Pinin in this country (rollover?). It's too cute and could be my third one day!

I feel that burn. We had to put our Odyssey in the shop day before yesterday for rr brakes and (bless her heart) my wife had no choice but to ride in the Monturbo to work. We only work a half a block apart, so we ride together periodically.

She had not ridden in the old truck since long before the turbo swap. Now that the A/C works again, she didn't seem to mind and in fact commented that it seemed to be faster than before.

My first thought was to reply, "DUH." But I thought better of it.

She said she enjoyed being back in the old "car" again (she always refused to call it a truck), but didn't miss the ride. After nearly three years in an Odyssey, I could see her point. Cruising in that thing's like going for a joy ride on your couch.

MissBlue,

Now, aren't you glad you didn't buy that Jeep? You wouldn't have found us.

There are some first-class gentlemen here. I welcome women on the board and have a genuine admiration for those who can crawl around under a rig and know what they're doing.

Your tale of buying your Raider kinda reminds me of how my wife and I came to buy our Montero.

A Blazer had run a stop sign and turned my Honda Civic 1500-S into a ragged rendition of a horseshoe, so we went car shopping. Our first stop was at the local (small) Toyota store. We drove an 87 4-Runner, but it was pretty damned underpowered and we were unimpressed with our sales person's ability to do anything but run to his manager with every single question. We left.

We drove to Greenville, S.C. to the Dodge store where a Raider caught our eye. We drove it, liked it and worked a deal on it, but would not sign the paperwork because we'd not cleared all the insurance hurdles with the Honda.

The very next Saturday, a mere seven days later, we went back to the Dodge store to buy a Raider, but found that the self same one we'd looked at a week earlier was $2,500 more expensive. We left.

One the way home, we passed a Mitsubishi store and parked on the grass out in front of the lot was a black Montero. I commented to my better half, "Damn, that thing looks just like a Raider."

We left - she in the car and me in that black Montero.

87 Montero, bought new, by me -

Now we just can't seem to part ourselves from the quirky, tough little truck. Oh, it's a truck. My 2004 rides like a station wagon, but came in very handy for our recent move. I've been printing out the FSM - geez it's hugh! Anyway, the vacuum hoses for the carb were replaced in November. I think I'm going to tackle the thermostat next. Has anyone ever popped a tie rod? I did years ago. Thankfully I was just rolling to a stop in my office parking lot. It just snapped!
