I know this is a common subject but I just wanted to make sure. I need a tire that wears well but also has excellent offroad performance in sand, mud, and a little bit of rock. I think this fits the description on the BF Goodrich M/T. I just want to know what everyone thinks. Thanks

Good question.

I run Firestone Destination A/T's on mine, but they were affordable and available when I bought them.

Look for one that has a little knobby to it, but also one that would be good on the highway for miles and road conditions like rain at normal highway speeds. Keep in mind that most "car" or "light truck" tires that are good for miles, will get you stuck in grassy terrain since they allow you to get grass stuck in the treads, making them more like racing slicks....

More often than not, an average Light Truck A/T tire will be a good all-around tire for occasional ORV use.

Remember, sand driving is different than mud or rock driving and you will have different reactions with any tire in different conditions with different air pressure.

I find that when I am driving on the beach, in or out of the dunes, my tires do quite well when I drop TP to about 15 pounds, but have run street tires with the right deflation on the beach and did quite well also....

Hope this helps a little.

Good luck and keep us posted. We learn from eachother here!

I love 'em. Performance is great, but I'll be buying a new set in under 20K miles. They are very soft rubber. It is a daily driver, but I'm pretty easy on them on the road. Only 2500 miles or so on them and over 1/8" wear. I have a new spare that I can compare them to.

Some on this board have sworn they (or their relative) got over 40K on a set. I think maybe they just didn't remember buying a set somwhere in between. It didn't happen.

MTR's from goodyear are by far the best wearing on and off road tire i have seen yet ....they are pricy and work well offroad(except really muddy situations) but over all a darn good tire .......BFg's are also good

Gee, Chris, I hope you're not blaming me?

I only average about 3000 miles per year on my rockcrawler with the SSR's mounted on it. This 2nd set of SSR's appears to be holding up much better than the earlier set; I think this is the 4th season with these 37x12.50's. The earlier set, 35x12.50's, appeared to developed cracks in the sidewalls just sitting in the driveway!

But, I did say that I've had experienced great mileage with the BFG AT's (KO series), definitely, more than 40,000 miles over the highway mounted on my Sahara before installing them on my Cherokee. For me, the SSR's have been a good all-around off-road tire and I've never had any expectations that the SSR's would hold up to a lot of highway miles. I knew that the compound was soft before I ever purchased the SSR's. My next set of tires will be even softer, I looking now at the grippy IROC's!

surfer, You're seeking what doesn't exist! There isn't a good mud tire for FL's mud, and . . . can give good highway mileage, too! AT's are meant to be kind of a trade-off between good offroad tire and a good highway tire. BFG M/T's are not a good mud tire (they don't clean well not matter how fast you spin them); but, overall a damn good tire offroad and highway. SSR's are fairly good mud tires, only a few aftermarket tires are better and most of those are from Interco. Don't expect them to hold up to extensive highway mileage from daily highway driving. BFG M/T's will give what I think is good highway mileage if rotated routinely. From what I saw of the terra firma about Naples, FL . . . I would suggest going with a very good mud tire and not worrying about highway mileage. What tires do four wheelers in your area generally use for those muddy trails?

Mudrunner
I run a set of 33" Cooper Discoverer A/T's they are a fairly aggressive All tearain tire and they are not too noisy on the highway. They do well in the mud and are a pretty stout tire. I've always had good luck with cooper tires, but they are pretty pricy as well. Before those I had a set of BFG's that were great in the snow but bit the big one in the mud.
