The 242 is somewhat weaker than the 231 though a version of it is used in the original Hummer.

I kept destroying the planetary set that was used in place of the VC. The outer gears would just rip right out of the set. It is a pretty stout case ..But for some reason when it got a load on it it would buckle at that planetary set.. I have talked to several other guys who swapped the 242 into V8 grands and theirs didnt hold up to heavy wheeling either..
When mine came apart the last time the planetary set literally blew into pieces and one piece went thru the side of the housing and it broke almost entirely in half from the stress..

My friends kept saying I hit it on a rock but my skid was not marked and when we watched the video later you can clearly see that I am half way up the rock pile and the rig looked like it lurched and you can see parts flying out the bottom.. I had at least 10 " of clearance... So .....It was not busted on a rock...

I would imagine with a 4.0 it would last forever but with 35's and the amount of HP and torque my 5.2 puts out ...It just wouldnt do..

Getting the Wheeling Fever
you guys are nuts! i love it!

..but i have to clear something up, the only reason i had to drive around in 4part time is cause the stupid thing is stuck... and i havent been driving it for a couple days now. I might be female but i'm not blonde.... not into trashing my very not cheap vehicle.I shift safely through the part time to get to full time, and it doesnt want to come out of part time. I have never willingly driven with my tcase is 4part time ever. Period end of story. If the shifter moves from 2 wd it gets stuck in part time with the turn radius locked down to where i can't make sharp turns. I had no choice but to drive it like that to get it home.

Why thank you nice lady...

I get it.. So....Are you out of 4 now?? If not try that jack thing I told you about to get it out and get it down the hill to the shop so they can take a look at your linkages and tires..

Good luck ..I hope it works out for you.. If not you can always swap a 231 in there and be done with it...

IF you want I can talk you thru adjusting the linkage on your own ..Its pretty simple.. All you need is one wrench...

Let me know.....

well aren't you sweet! It was still stuck in part time as of sunday when i moved it a little to see if it might've felt like kicking itself out like it has before .. but ... no ... so i left it where it was lol! I wish i could switch stuff out on it but i still have a warranty on it from the dealer... wich will be voided if i dont use all standard parts on it before the warranty is up *growl* ... i'm getting a whole new set of tires put on tomarrow morning and the rest of her goes to the dealer on thursday.... lets just hope they dont figure out the tire situation (they didn't before)... wish me luck LOL

if i was going to jack the front up like you said, and spin the tires backwards.. would i need to have it in any certain gear? should i have the shifter in part time where its stuck or in 2wheel where i want it to be for now? engine off or on? all i need to do now is to make it so bad i can't drive it at all

Just leave it in 2 ... Chock your back wheels.. jack it up.. Put it in Neutral.(tranny not t case..) and roll the wheels forward and back.. Have someone else spin while you pull the t case shifter back to 4 and push it into 2 again...

It should free it up.. If not since you have it up you can take the front Drive shaft off...

Good luck..

Carl
