Need a Spot
Howdy: I looked through the archive on stability of tires & towing capacity. Nothing really fits my needs there. Here is a new slant on a old question. I have 30x 9.50 15's Michelin LTX tires on 15x8 American Racing wheels AR-36's. Good wide stance. The tires a little tall 29.7 diameter 706 revs per mile. In overdrive 4 speed auto w/torque converter lock 2750 rpm around 60-63 mile per hour, if I remember right.
I'm good on level ground, accelerate good, no strain when towing a 1800 pound trailer with 400+ Lbs motorcycle. But when I hit any hill 1/4 mile longer grade, I loose speed very quickly. Sort of like, someone through out a boat anchor to drag. Trailer is enclosed. I'm good on slight hills I can switch the trans on torque lock option and can really sink my foot in the accelerator. I'm good on level ground with the trailer. Walk away from stoplights with ease.

SO,,,I was thinking of going to a smaller diameter tire with more revs per mile. maybe 749 or 760 revs? Like a 60 series tire that is wider, but not as tall. 265/60x15. Sort of like changing gearing. I know I'm loosing Top end speed but maybe gaining some 'umph' on the hills? I'll get clobbered in the Truck lane on Interstate 81 if I can't stay above 55 up hill.
The Montero has been bullet proof, we have owned it since it was a pup in 95. The motor revs freely, 88k miles and no problems when not towing anything. I average 19-21 mpg, so mechanically I think everything is good, Maxlife dexron III in the trans and it has a trans cooler. I have that John Barker hitch, 2 inch receiver that connects to the frame and 'Stump Puller' on the rear. No sway with the KYB mono Max shocks.
wider is better.
What do you think ? 60 series tires or use the Dodge Ram?
Let me know , I appreciate it
Rob

yeah, smaller tires will help significantly.

How much, I can't tell you;
anecdotally, going from 31's back to 235-75-15's got me from 3rd to 4th gear climbing a couple of local hills.
That translated to road speeds going from 35-40 up to 55-60. But that's a Gen 1 manual...

fwiw,
Toby

I am voting on using the Dodge Ram. If it is a cummins diesel even better. Then you can get 33's on the Monty and have a serious play rig also

Body Damage is Cool
I went from Springfield, Virginia to Hattiesburg, Mississippi on 30x950 M/S Dunlops with a loaded down U-Haul 9 Foot trailer. I was getting passed by truckers in the hills
