I just noticed today that everytime I floor my Rodeo, the battery volt meter drops from about 14 to 11-12. Is it normal for it to dip down????? Or is something wrong?

Yup, it's normal. I'm currently on my fourth alternator and they've all done that. I think I read somewhere else on this forum that one of the leads into the alternator tells it when engine vacuum is low (engine revving). The alt then somehow produces less voltage, causing less resistance on the engine.

This is discussed in the owners manual (if you have it).

I have the same problem with my '96. At first I thought it was an alt. problem but I noticed that the only time that the voltage would drop was when the accelerater pedal was pressed. I was able to find that by turning the park lights or headlights on it would stop this from happening. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

From page 2-8 of the 1997 (1996 as well?) Rodeo Owner's Manual:
"When the accelerator pedal is pressed, when driving or with the engine idling, the voltmeter will drop into the low voltage range. This results from a changeover in alternator voltage control designed for fuel economy improvement. However, the voltmeter needle will not drop if the head lights are turned on or if the engine coolant temperature remains low."

Didn't think something like that would be in the owner's manual, but thanks anyway. Glad that its normal...

If I accelerate moderately, the needle doesn't drop. It only drops when I punch the pedal to the floor.
