I know there is a ton of info on 4Crawler's website, but I haven't seen this covered. Here goes. The rear window quit going down, but I could hear the relay switch when I pressed the up button, so I went through and checked all the connectors. After disconnecting the large main connector bundle and reconnecting it, the window will *intermitently* roll down. It will go down an inch and then stop and I will have to press the button a bunch of times to get another inch out of it. Where do I go next? Should I put dielectric grease in that large connector? Is the relay on the fritz? I need some help with this one as I only have a few days to fix it before I leave for a long camping trip and I need that window to work. Thanks a ton for the help, -John <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

I had problems with mine, I had to take apart the switch and clean the contacts.... (Inside of the switch itself)
Does it work with the Key??? or are both the same...
Found this little bit of info which may help all 1st Gen Runner guys... While bobbing buddies runner, on drivers side the bolt hole by the roll bar (bar closest to gate) there is a button in the hole, that the bolt makes contact with (depresses) - safety switch... Make sure you have you bolt in that hole. Mine works with out (84 - might be stuck in - depressed)...
Also may want to check relay (just behind drivers seat) I had it get wet and needed a good drying out before it worked.

My intermitant problems were due to poor contact at the safety switch at the tailgate latch. I took it apart and cleaned it and it worked for awhile but I eventually bypassed it. Yank out the connecter at the switch and make a wire jumper to fool it into thinking the gate is shut. Worth a try and pretty easy to do. You will then have to make sure you don't send the window up with the gate down. Hasn't really been a problem. I did it once, gasped and ran around back to support it, but no harm was done.

I had a similar problem, and found that it was a bad ground. Worked fine when I jumpered the connector, but wouldn't work with the switch. Initially, i thought it was the switch, and got another, but the same thing happened. I just added a new ground to the system, and Viola...it works like a charm.
Good Luck

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did.

Mine was doing that, and it was the tailgate latch on mine too. Just jumpered it, and haven't had any trouble since. Makes it easier to clean and lube the gearing and guides too. Just open the tailgate, and once you take off the cover, everything is right there out in the open and easy to access. You can run the window up and down without having to close it all the time.

No, my rear switch doesn't work at all either. My rear wiper wiring is all disconnected so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure I understand where it is that I jumper the safety switch in the rear. An pics of the connectors or color descriptions?

Almost all the switches operate by closing a connection to ground or shorting their two contacts together to allow current to flow. So to jumper one, short the two wires that run from each switch together (or the one wire to ground); viola switch bypassed.

I figured it out - it is the actual window switch. I jumpered the contacts and it rolls up and down just fine. Now I need to find a new one or wire up a trick new setup. Thanks for the help all. -John
