Ya, putting a tire on a narrower rim then recommended will really wear out the center of the tire faster, but maybe you can counteract that buy using low air pressure so you have even tread contact.

However, I would think that the buldging side wall effect would change the handling of the truck. Also, I would think that your wear pattern would be off and you would get fewer miles on the the tires.

Handling I mind. Wear, I do not. As it is my Kumho Venture MTs (pretty soft, IMHO) have lasted more than 50k miles. The Wrangler AT/S's that I had on before these lasted more than 50k miles.

Wear, well, I don't want to pay for contact patch/rubber I'm not using. Anyone have an idea of how distorted it would be? I would think that with that much sidewall the contact patch would still stay reasonably flat.

It might be worth a trip to the tire store and ask them to mount one up and test fit it.

Thanks again, everyone, for all the good info.

You could get an idea by getting the actual section width and height of the tire you are wanting to purchase. Then use the rim width with a centerline from the section width to the centerline of the rim width the length of the tire height. Am I coming through clear. I feel as though it is not. HTH - JL

according to messurements (not under load), my tires are deflecting 5? from the mounting surface.

Your sittuation, using interco specs for a 33x12.5 would be deflecting 10? beyond mounting surface.

Like this \ / How much is too much is the question.

Then you would have to lower pressure to compensate for wear pattern. This will exaggerate this deflection due to squatting of the tire with lower pressure. Rolling resistance goes up as does heat. Down goes tire life and fuel milage.

I'm really not trying to talk you out of it . I'm sure it's been done. FWIW - JL

Thanks. My 10.5's seem OK on my 7" rims now, but that's on the low side of what Kumho (and most other mfrs) recommend.

I am reluctant to go the 33x 10.5 route due to more height and not more track (stability). Probably would be OK, though.

I'm thinking with the 32x11.5, I'm gaining .5" in height and spreading it another .75" or so. Should only deform it slightly?

I used a 7.5 rim in the above reply for your application.

Same issues as above only less dramatic. according to Interco, you are adding .75" in height and spreading .5" - JL

EDIT to add - I, personally (and I know your not asking) would d0 the 33x10.5 and enoy the extra height.

I'm also running 33x10.5, no lift, 15x7 OE alloys. no rub, no problems. I've tried to cross it up but still couldn't get any contact that I noticed.

handling is good - expected it to be really obviously bad when I made the change. I'd cruise curves without worry(no front swaybar either), felt very stable. keeping the IFS height unmolested rewards you with fine & dandy handling regardless of tire size(to a limit i suppose)

theres an old thread on Pirate showing a dude running 33x12.5 on the OE 15x6 alloys, stock height. he claimed no problems at all & had plenty of wheeling pics.

for all out trail use I'd wager 34x9.5 swampers will be a good fit on neutral 6" rims without a lift.

I have no idea. If you want, I'll get out there and take one off and measure it the first chance I get.

I'll be throwing some new shoes on my trooper soon , its a first gen with a 3" suspension lift , and I am going with 33x12.5 on an 8 inch rim.I might go with a 10" rim if they have the same price and they fit ok.Getting 4 new tires and rims , installed and balanced for 1100 , which is pretty good considering everywhere else around here wants 1100 just for 4 31" tires.
