That looks like the Black Rock Desert in Northern Nevada. The flat playa is fun to drive on.

The has three parts (totally about 160 miles):

1. Stony and hilly desert from Ray Patch Reservoir up to Quinn river.

2. Black Rock desert, it's eastern part.

3. High Rock Canyon, rather well-known place among Nevada 4wheelers.

The "offroad" term is applicable, to some extend, only to the High Rock Canyon (in good weather), but the whole trail, due to it's remoteness, is still to be taken seriously. If your car is broken, you may wait several days for a passing vehicle, in many places of the trail. And the heat is well above 100F there.

I had to keep the engine and the A/C on the whole day, becouse I had a pet in the cab and the heat was unbearable for a small anymal.
