i have a chance to buy a 89 xtracab sr5 pickup the truck is relly nice it has 250000 mi. i love the truck but it has a problem with the transer case the truck has full time 4 wheel drive when driving it shifts into 2wheel at like 35mph then when slowing down the thing goes to kick back in it whines then clunks into gear. the truck is only $900 and i was wondering if this is fixable or how hard it is to change a t-case or if i should beware of this deal.

Welcome to the board.

First the truck does not have full time 4wd unless the previous owner swapped in another drivetrain.

Second, If it does not have manual hubs and the owner has been driving it around in 4wd on the street claiming it has "full time 4wd" just run away now. You now know why the trransfer case is messed up.

It sounds like a great parts truck or budget wheeler depending on what else is messed up. If you know how to turn a wrench and want a project pick it up. Otherwise run the other way fast.

Does it have a body lift? It could be as simple as he body, or shift boot pulling on the stick. or maybe someone bent the stick a little climbing around on the inside of the cab. Kids or some adult entertainment . It could be the indent spring is bad. Normaly it kiks out of 4 wheel, not into. Are you sure it is going from 2wd to 4wd. There is a nutral between the 2 gears in the Tcase. Does it have auto locking hubs? Get it andd toss them aside when you do the SAS!

If it is a 5 sped 22RE I would buy it. the gear drive Tcase can be found and fixed no problem. If it is an Auto. I would stay away. I just don't like autos, and they are pricy in the salvage yard.

i am shure the truck has all time 4wd it even has badges on it that say full time 4wd o and its a v6 with an auto
is the trans from a 22re the same as a v6? the truck is almost mint expt for the paint is bubbling under the passanger mirror ant the tail gate is a lil rusty but it has all power sun roof cruise 31/10.50 with a ¢ inch+ tread no lift it has a painted to match brush gaurd and one of those fiberglass rollbar things that go from the back of the cab to the bed

Ponda - there was/is no such thing as a full time awd Hilux from the factory. There is something known as ADD - automatic differential disconnect, literally disconnects one front axle preventing driveline bindup.

I hesitate to say there is such a thing as an AWD Hilux anywhere - though I've heard of Viscous Coupling hubs (Milemarker?) that can create a similar effect.

Badges don't mean anything, take a look at the drivetrain and tell us what you see, pictures would be better.

The transmissions are different, and I would imagine the one in the truck has a chain driven transfer case, a well known weak link.

Well that could certianly be the case. But I don't believe so.

I'd bet it's a ADD
