I had to R&R the head on my 84 truck (don't ask ). While the head was off, I noticed quite a bit of black sooty build up on the piston tops. The motor only has about 10,000 miles on it since it was rebuilt. Does this mean the carb is running rich? If so, where is the adjustment screw for that and how far should it be adjusted and in which direction?
sorry if this has been covered before. I did a search and either I entered lame keywords or it hasn't been discussed in the last year.

Usually exsessive blowby causes the black stuff but a rich carb will too. LMK what screw you are talking about messing with.

I suspect the carb is running rich for additional reasons. How does one adjust the fuel/air mixture?

That spot that says "don't touch". You have to remove the brass cover to get to it. Problem is that the vibration of the engine will cause the screw to back out over time. Thats what the plug does, helps it stay put.

ahh well isn't that convenient. Any idea how far and in which direction it needs to go? I'll just stick some JB weld in there to hold 'er when I'm done!

Turning that screw only masks the real problem. It should never me messed with...
But if you really don't care, turning it in will lean it out. Turning it out will richen. The plug is removed with a drill. Just go slighly through the plug then use a screwdriver to pry it out. DO NOT DRILL THE SCREW!!!

I appreciate your patience, Arbitrary. Last question. What do you mean by, "turning that screw only masks the real problem"? What is the real problem? I'd rather fix that.

That screw only changes the mix at idle. Once you touch the throttle the circut is cut off and you run off the mains/secondaries. A stock engine is set up correctly and none of the fuel specs need to be changed.
A leakdown test would be best. It could be that you have bad valve stem seals and you are leaking oil in there. It's just realy hard to tell from this far away.

hmmm. What a puzzler. The head is a fresh rebuild. the motor has ten thousand miles on it. The carb is a rebuild from a local shop. Oh well, thanks for your time, AN.

DO NOT DRILL THE SCREW!!! Well Arbitrary, you were right. The real problem was more than an air/fuel mixture screw. For the benefit of others who may be reading this, the problem was the primary jet was worn out. It was making the carb run poorly even though it had been re-built by a so-called prfessional. We replaced the jet and the truck passed emitions with flying colors. It was almost as good as my 3rd gen. runner. So thanks for giving me the clues necessary to hunt down the real problem.
