Getting the Wheeling Fever
Went to install the sleeve today on the rear crank flange... everything went well until I had it in place and went to cut that "flange" piece off.

First off, is it necessary to cut it off, or can I just leave it? It was a real pain in the arse to try and cut that flange to the point of the pre-cut line to pry it away. Once I was able to start prying the flange away, it left the edges kinda warped in some places, even though I was careful to try and avoid that. And I also ended up scratching the sleeve surface a bit when removing that piece. $%^$&^*%$! I'm not having a good evening.

Anyway, I removed the sleeve and will try and get another tomorrow.
Any good pointers here would be well-appreciated.

Ummm....what are you cutting? If you are trying to remove the lip that is on the backside of the sleeve...DON'T.

Clean up the crank surface where the sleeve will be covering...tap on the sleeve making sure to slide it on evenly all sides and dont moosh it. Once the lip makes contact finish assembling everything and see if the sleeve took care of the leak.

Aha! I knew I shouldn't have cut that stupid lip off

Thanks for the help Darin. So I should be tapping on the sleeve far enough so the lip sits flush with the forward end of the crank flange? Or just to the place that the lips of the seal will ride on? I measured everything out very precisely the first time and it ended up nt having to be tapped all the way back.

Thanks again for providing access to your infinate wisdom

What brand is the sleeve you purchased? Some of them have an outward lip on the end that slides over the shaft first that is used for an installation tool to push against.Like this...
[Linked Image]

The ones I have always used from EB had no outward lip, just a slight inward lip that stopped the sleeve from sliding onto the shaft too far. bAsically it mated with the chamfered edge on the end of the shaft. When fully installed everything is flush for the flywheel mounting.

Cant find a friggin picture for the life of me though!!

**This is a 7MGTE - but serves the purpose. Look on the rear end of the crankshaft, notice the shiny portion.....thats a sleeve.

Thats how the ones I have installed on 22Rs have been. The sleeve only covers a portion of the area- not inteded to be pushed all the way up the shaft.

Yeah, the kind I have is like the first one... it's got a big lip on it for use with the installation tool. The brand is Chicago Rawhide. It seems to be the only kind of sleeve that a few local parts stores carry.

Perhaps I need to order one from EB.

Well, before I was going to buy another one, I looked it over and it seemed to be the same as the first one I tried. I don't want to have to deal with that stupid flange again though (plus they're expensive up here.. $56 CAN.), so I didn't buy it yet. I'm thinking it might be better to try one from EB. I've had success with all the other parts I've bought from him

toys4me- Thanks for the advice man! I like that electrical tape idea as well.

Anyway, I ordered a sleeve from EB (actually 2, seeing as they were such a good price. Now I have some for my friends..heheh). I'm hoping this time around it should work out.

don't feel bad I had the same problem and never figured it out and went and got a seal with a smaller inside. yep 30,000 miles and it is leaking again.
with this info I may try again.
I also tried not seating the seal all the way. figured new area. nope, it spun out of the block, front oil seal on a Mazda pickup.
oh this is on an arrons rebuilt motor, from I guess mexico as the addy was in tex. I found the first time it blew that they used the cam seal on the crank..... yes it fits.
