Hey Guys,
Well, after 2 solid trouble -free years she's giving me problems...any oppinions on the problem?
-Driving away from home yesterday, the Raider suddenly acted like it was out of fuel.
-1-200 RPMs for 10 secs, then died.(Throttle made it choke worse) -1-200 RPMs for 5 secs then died. -1-200 RPMs for 5 secs then died. -Cranking with no start.
-30 minute wait. Then started up to 400 RPM then instantly died.
-Another wait , nothing but cold cranking.
My IAC I believe was already U/S, it has been idling on the throttle stop screw for years. Just plane acted like I was running out of gas - no amount of throttle would increase the revs, only act to choke it up more. Fuel filter is new ( 12 months )
EDIT: From a previous poster who had similair probs." I determined the most likely cause of the problem was in the control relay circuit--which includes the ignition switch, the control relay, and the ECU. After doing some voltage and ohm checks, I found the Ignition switch and the control relay were OK. I believe I have a bad ECU . To get the Monte running temporarily I decided to short pins 2 & 3 of the control relay, that in effect bypasses a power transistor in the ECU (I believe that particular power transistor is faulty). It worked!
Um, how does one short these pins to see if this is my problem too?

have you checked for power to your fuel pump? and when was the last time you had a fuel filter change? i had something very similar happen to my old nissan 89' se v6, (great wheeler) and alls it needed was a full tune up. btw, did this problem just come out of the blue or had it been steadily acting up until it got to this point?

I was the previous poster you quoted. I used a paper clip and pushed it in beside the wires in the connector. Your problem is similar, but not exactly like mine. On mine it would start and run about 4 or 5 seconds then die. It would do this every time I tried to start it. It never got to where it wouldn't start. After I shorted the pins together it started and ran fine. Keep in mind my mits is a '90 and yours is an '89, there could be some wiring differences since they don't use the same ECU.

Stopped by the shop ( Had it towed as I have to work )
And so far after 3 hours of diagnosing electrical they have so far come up with " no power to fuel pump"
I guess we'll see what tomorrow brings. Does this diagnosis lead to anything obvious IE: the XYZ relay etc? In case it helps speed them up.

And so far after 3 hours of diagnosing electrical they have so far come up with " no power to fuel pump" could be a couple things... corrosion on the wiring connectors (which are pretty hard to get to, at least on the lwb), or mabey even just bad wiring to the pump, worst case senerio... the pump itself. i was looking for one a while back, when i thought that was my problem, and was unable to locate a aftermarket one. stealer item only and they are very expensive. if its the pump and it was me, id through in a quality aftermarket inline electric pump. good luck with that.

And so far after 3 hours of diagnosing electrical they have so far come up with " no power to fuel pump" It's starting to sound like the ECU (a la IdahoJack). If you can get back to that post, let me know and I'll review it again. In that thread I made some suggestions wrt how the relay was triggered. Read that carefully. Ask the shop to hold the control relay contacts closed and see if it will run. Frank

Frank Ya, thats a good post to refer to. http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showf...mp;amp;sb=5&o=14&fpart=1I'll suggest that to them in the morning. I already tried to explain this burnt ECU idea to them 3 times. I feel like I'm speaking another language.

Wow, I can't believe it took them 3 hours to figure out there was no power to the fuel pump. You could easily have the same problem as I had. I would guess it is the ECU, but it could also be the control relay. Good luck.

Got a call this morning from them,
The new diagnosis is the " The fuel pump is shot, aftermarket available for $300, total bill $500"
They stated they checked all relays ( 4 hours ) and ECU etc and they are confident fuel pump is the problem. I asked them to try bypassing the control relay just to ensure it is NOT the ECU and they confirmed they had.Sooooo
I gave them the go ahead to install the new pump.
We'll see. If they are wrong I'll be pissed.
This is the problem when you have neither the time, resources , or garage to do your own work- Although I cannot complain too much because she has been trouble free ( relatively) for 3 + years.
We'll see......
Thanks guys so far for the help.
