Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
After 2 years I finally decided to put a pulley on the tensioner and a belt so I could use the air but I'm not getting any cold air on my '90 Amigo. The switch is working as the light comes on and the idle speed increases when its on. I've had 2 different gauges attached to the low side and both indicate that its full. Everything seems okay but the clutch will not kick in. Is there anything I may be overlooking or is the compressor shot?

I am not a Air Cond. expert.....but the only way you can really tell the charge status is with the pump running (clutch engaged). Sitting for 2 years ??...More than likely you are undercharged and low pressure switch (if it has one) will not allow the clutch to engage. I have had to by-pass the switch to fill a empty system...other wise the pump would never turn...and suck in the freon. Hey.... that is my 2 cents worth!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

you cannot accurately charge a system without removing everything (creating a vacuum) and charging coolant into the vacuum. You need a vacuum pump to bring the system to 20+ inches of Hg for atleast 2 hours to boil off any moisture. This will also tell you if your system is leak free.

You can also try shorting (putting a wire accross) the clutch cycling switch while the A?C button is pushed at idle. The clutch will manually cycle if you do this for testing. If your switch and clutch are both fine, your high side pressure is out of range and your clutch is not engaging as a safety precaution.

Make sure to check your compressor clutch relay. Common failures in AC systems. Ryan

If your switch and clutch are both fine, your high side pressure is out of range and your clutch is not engaging as a safety precaution. Kicked it on with the jumper which caused the gauge to show empty. Filled it while the jumper was on but the clutch will still not kick on without the jumper attached.
