Penetrating oil and/or some heat?

It's a craftsman, same as my breaker and socket. I get a new one with the warranty, but I couldn't care less right now. I just want this done. Right now it looks like I'm admitting defeat until next summer maybe. I've been spraying it with oil.

I think when the dealership did this last time the joker used the really big impact on it's highest setting to put it back on.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well with Honda's and some GM's heating them with a torch then putting the impact to them works great...Some people advise against this, but hey odds are you are going to do worse damage any other way...Take a torch and apply heat directly to the bolt and while it's hot as he put the impact to it and let it eat for a good duration... this my take several times...you dont have to get it glowing red though...good luck (p.s. watch the bolt when it comes out for you will get burned...i grabbed the last one uhh dumb move)

Hmmmm, you gottum some biggum problem BobDole!

I think the heat thing may do the trick. I wonder if in addition to the billion pounds of torque they used putting it back on if they didn't put some loctite on there also? Just your luck they used the stud and bearing mount stuff.

You might wanna think about picking up a new balancer in the meantime. I don't know how the rubber cushion ring will hold up to heat from the torch???

I'm moving along on my job, the head is off, and boy was that gasket blown! I don't understand how this truck ran so well... but right now I've got a stuck oil pump drive pulley. Tomorrow morning I'll remove the pump, put it the vice, give it some heat, and hopefully get it off without breaking the pulley. I think my problem is loctite related, looks like the factory went a little overboard with the loctite when they installed the nut. The loctite appears to have run down the pump shaft and that's what is keeping the pulley from coming off. Should slide right off of there...

Good Luck BobDole!
Let us know what happens.
Jeff

I'll vote for some possible locktite usage. Heat will help break it down. Heat it up, keep it reasonable, and then let it cool. It may be enough to release the locktite.

The extension broke because of the pipe on the breaker bar. 1/2" stuff is tough, generally, but adding that extension easily multiplied the torque on the system. As long as the socket is tight, the bolt won't round and the weakest link breaks (the exension). Now, don't get me wrong, I abuse tools like the next guy, but it is good to know what the limits are and how likely it is that something is going to break.

Good Luck,
Michael

Couldn't sleep... went out to the garage to see if I could get that pulley off. Tried a different puller that I had, and she slid off finally! Of course, the PB BLASTER had a little extra time to work too...

Hope Bob's problem resolves itself as mine did!

G'nite!
Jeff

Well, my problem resolved itself alright.

RETREAT!!!!

I put it all back together, and said next summer will be a fine time to tackle this job.

I've got alot of stuff on my plate right now, and I think the timing belt will hold up for another 10 or 12k. It looked nice enough when I got the top cover off.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Ill look this thread up when I feel up to the beastly task.

The only thing I didn't see someone mention is shocking the nut by putting the socket and breaker bar on and hitting it hard with a hammer in the direction of removal (sometimes the opposite direction helps too, but dont hit too hard , you dont want it tighter!)

But then maybe your impact gun already did what my manual way already tried...

So, for those that are interested in a conclusion, my leaking (gushing) water pump forced me to try it again. After another go at it with a torch and BIG extension on the breaker bar, I pulled with all I had and couldn't get it off. I put it back together and took it to a shop.

They guy said he had to dissasemble the entire front end to fit a 3/4 inch snap on impact (1100ft/lbs) and hammer on the thing for a good bit to get it off. All I can say is wow.

So, after 10 or 11 hours of wasted work, 230 bucks and two days without my daily driver, it is done. All I can say is dealerships.

I know this is a "little" late, but you can also put a breaker bar on it with enough of an extension (piece of pipe perhaps) to rest it on the frame... Bump the starter and presto, unstuck bolt.
