What year transmissions will bolt-in? Will the trans from a '95 V-6 bolt-in?

Brian

I believe all W56 transmissions from '85 to about '91 will be a straight swap. They improved the W56 in the mid ninties, but they also changed the shifter positions a little, so you'd have to trim the tunnel opening if you get one of those. The '95 V6 had a different trans called the R150. You could make it work, but you would need an R151 bellhousing, which is hard to find and can run around $200 when you can. You'd also need to use the transfer case that came with the '95 trans and you probably have to do a little sheetmetal trimming on the tunnel where the shifters come through. There are probably lots of W56 trannys in the junkyard near where you live that you could get for $275. They are also on eBay all the time. You can also get a rebuilt for about $600 from the best Toyota tranny guru in the country, (see Marlin Crawler.com). They're in Fresno, in central Kalifornia. -- Matt
