Body Damage is Cool
Taro, I was on the phone with St. Charles ordering gaskets and filters a couple of each and was told that the filters have a life of like 100,000 miles. and they can be cleaned. and they cost $74 a pop as well. Looking at what I recieved it is kind of like an inlet and an outlet encased in an aluminum shell with a fiber filter. Not exaclty sure if there is a proper cleaning process for it. Back flush with water and let dry?

Anyway, I thought I'd pick up a couple of these in line magnetic transmission filters and put it in the return line from the transmission oil cooler

Just act as a transmission filter. except outside of the transmission.

When I installed my replacement transmission, I installed one of these:

It isn't a small item, but I managed to find room for it under the driver's side front headlight. I mounted it to my ARB bumper, but if I had the stock bumper I would have made a small braket out of thick strap and bolted the bracket to the radiator support.

Can you pick up replacement filters "down the street" or do they have to be reordered.

It takes the standard Ford style large filter. FL1A or somethign like that. So I have a WIX or something on there now. It comes with a sticker that has about a dozen different part numbers on it that will all fit. That also means that you can get an oversized filter, but this one also holds about a quart so I'm not sure what oversized would get you.

The magnets inside pick up metal contaminants passing by, like the magnets in your trans and t-case drain plugs.

Jeremy,

I don't remember paying that much for the filter, but I probably just picked up a generic/disposable filter at Autozone ($10-$15?). About these filters lasting 100k miles... the first service for the tranny isn't due until 120k miles. When my tranny went at 95k miles, Isuzu wasn't around to cover the cost of fixing my tranny. Many people I have spoken to have reportedly had success with filter/fluid changes around every 30k miles. My plan now is to change the filter and fluid every 30k miles. Again, this might be overkill, but I'd much rather spend a few bucks rather than a few thousand bucks. I'd never thought about a line filter. If they work, it sounds like good insurance. good luck!
