Sounds like a first gen Amigo to me, you wont get quite that good of gas mileage but its decent.

From what I see here, the Amigos sound pretty good, but I'm not finding many for sale in this area. When did the 2nd generation start? What kind of ground clearance do the first generation have?

Second gen started in 98, first gens stopped being produced for the US market in 94.

IMHO first gens have awesome groundclearence, only limiting factor is the exhaust, which i have yet to hit.

Have you looked at the Kia Sportage?
They have a real ladder frame, and manual transfer case.

The quality isn't up to par with Toyos, but I like mine.
I get 25 - 27 MPG on the highway if I limit myself to 65 MPH.

I looked a Kia and was impressed with the design. However, I found a website with owner reviews of all types of vehicles. The reviews of the Kias were mostly pretty negative. That would not bother me if I had the time for some of the more radical modifications that many of the guys on this forum have done, but I want to buy something that I can use in pretty much stock condition. Reliability is #1. That is causing me some difficulty in my search. In my book, frills like electric windows, electric door locks, automatic transmissions, etc. are problems waiting to happen with a vehicle when it has fairly high miles on it. Based on owner reviews and vehicle specs I have narrowed the field to a Geo Tracker, Suzuki Sidekick, and maybe a Vitara, though I am not sure if they are available without the extra frills.

Well, it looks like I'm about to become a former Toyota owner. Found an '89 Suzuki Sidekick Sport that gets better than 30 mpg on the highway and, with a few minor mods, should serve my 4WD purposes.

I appreciate the help from this forum. This is one of the best I have found.
