Sc0rp10n:
I see ads for later model Amigos. One particular '99 I have seen sounds interesting. Are the changes in the later models significant relating to off-road abilities? I suspect ground clearance might be an issue.
Another question: The specs for Suzuki Vitaras, Sidekicks and Geo Trackers look interesting, but I don't see much activity in the forum here. How do they do for moderate off-roading?

Hey nick, thanks for covering those questions the reb asked me, I completely forgot about this thread therefore have not been checking it. Everytime I see Houlsters 'migo I get all excited.
reb, I am not educated on the Suzuki's but I think most peoples complaints on the samis is that the gerbils under the hood are malnutritioned . Most people use donor motors out of the sidekicks and trackers and also swap in toy axles. As far as late model Amigos the suspension and axles are about the same as 1st gens when it comes to strength and reliability. The only changes I can see being an issue offroad is the increased use of plastic molding/bumpers. One good trail ride and you will see what needs upgraded in the body department

One big difference between first and second gen Amigos (and Rodeos, but not Troopers) is that the second gen went to a rack and pinion steering rather than recirculating ball.

The Samurai is interesting. The only ones I have found have high miles (one advertised in Prescott Valley with 11,000 miles really has 116,000 miles). I have too many hobbies now and really don't want to rebuild a 4X4. Looked at a '99 Isuzu advertised as having a manual tranny, but had an auto. The front ground clearance was inadequate, too. I would like something with a bit more ground clearance, that will run the back roads around here with minimum modifications, does not need a lot of work, and gets better than about 25 mpg on the highway. Maybe it does not exist.
