Getting the Wheeling Fever
on a 22re? I've heard that it's got a plug in it or something from the factory. Is it not recommended to be tampered with? I don't have a tach but the idle seems to drop just a little too low when sitting. Even worse with the AC on. When I barely push on the gas pedal it smooths out perfectly.

Derin would be the guy to ask. He is the 22R-xx master!

But, if I remember correctly, I think it is a flat-head skrew on the throttle body. Kinda looks like it is almost inside of it.

But, I'm not sure if thats it....
Derin, chime in here!

its located on the intake mainfold toward the front. Stay away from the AFM unless you know what your doing.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've tried to adjust that screw on the left of the throttle body but it doesnt seem to be the one that I'm looking for, it doesn't sound the same as simply turning the throttle linkage just a hair. i'm thinking about drilling and tapping a peg to limit the range at the bottom but I figured there was an adjustment somewhere. I've only got the AFM 2 notches counterclockwise from stock that shouldn't affect it. anybody else have an idea for the adjustment?

Red arrow points at the idle adjustment.

If it is not having much effect on the idle I would suspect vacuum leaks. Also check for sludge buildup in the throttle body plenum.

I would definitely put the AFM back to the stock setting.
I've heard bad things about tweaking it on 22RE's.

Don't alter the throttle plate linkage to raise your idle. The throttle plate must return to the fully closed position for the little vacuum passages to function correctly. You also wouldn't be able to properly adjust the TPS. In fact, the first thing I would check is to make sure the throttle plate IS fully closing. Pretty common for the "tar" to build up to the point that it keeps it from returning to closed. This also affects the TPS operation negatively.

If the idle adjustment screw isn't having any effect on the idle, then you have an underlying problem. It is basically a controlled air bypass around the throttle plate.

As for the AFM tweak not affecting it.....If the AFM is measuring the wrong amount of air coming through the intake tube then the wrong amount of fuel is being sent through the injectors by the ECU. So another possibility is the AFM is seeing more air than is actually going through it at idle, so it's sending so much fuel that the screw is not capable of bypassing enough air to make up for it.

This also means your probably getting your cylinder walls washed with unburned gas. Ask Darrin about that sometime...

Isn't the afm what gets adjusted for higher altitude driving? what kind of damage can it cause? I have an rv cam installed and it just seems to run better at this setting through all rpms. now back to the vacuum leak, does any body have any reference for me to look at regarding '86 22re vacuum diagrams? Any help would be appreciated. more info on the damage that the afm can cause is also welcome.

The ECU should automatically adjust for high (and low) elevations. AFM just measures the air flowing through it. Make sure your TPS is adjusted properly, then make sure the timing is set properly and then the idle should adjust normally. For the bogging with A/C on, make sure the A/C ivle up setting works (the white plastic knob on the intake), see if the VSV is operating and make sure the vacuum lines are not clogged.
