Trooper II rear brake drag #632840 08/03/05 03:16 PM

Question. What is the correct procedure for pushing in the piston on an '88 Trooper rear disk brake caliper. Special tool or C-clamp? The reason I ask is that I used both and now my caliper seems to be dragging. The pads seem to stay on the disk even after I let off the brake. I get this strange vibration sound - not a squeal or sqeak but more of a hum coming from the rear axle. The disks seem to be blued from the heat. Should I bleed the rear brakes? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Roll Me Over
The piston does "push" in. Rather, it is screwed in. Some people use needle-nosed pliers. I bought a universal tool at the local mass-market auto parts store that uses a 3/8" drive extension and a ratchet.

I did essentially the same thing but I tried the C-clamp first. Could I have damaged it somehow? I did use the special tool later and I seemed to turn relatively easily. Would bleeding the brakes help possibly?

Need a Spot
I had a similar problem with the left rear disks wearing out long before the right. I did a brake bleed after replacing the pads and it seems to have addressed the issue.

Good luck

That sounds easy enough. Maybe I just got some junk in the cylinder where the piston goes inside the caliper. Any other suggestions are certainly welcome as well.
