My friend's '87 Runner w/ a 22RE is having a "stumbling" problem between 2000-2500 rpms. The truck will lurch like it's not getting enough gas. It idles smoothly and otherwise runs great. The plugs, wires, cap/rotor are all factory Toyota and fairly new. I thought the EGR valve might be the problem but have ruled it out since removing it and plugging the ports didn't make any difference. Have you replaced your fuel filter lately? Could also be your TPS being out of adjustment..

This is what I'd do: 1. Clean the TB really well, you can easily remove the whole air plenum up top there and clean that entire assembly.
2. Check idle and timing by jumpering the test port. If idle or timing cannot be set properly, adjust the TPS. You can check roger brown's website for some details on this.
3. Give the valves an adjustment. Lots of people have had luck adjusting them cold to .001 under spec, I've only ever done it hot to FSM specs (.008 and .012).
4. If it's been a while for plugs/wires/cap/rotor I'd throw a few dollars at these items.

If the problem is consistant, could be the TPS is damaged on the inside. Burns or whatever to the traces on the board and when the finger like contacts run over that area, continuity is lost...as it passes back onto good traces things return to normal.
My original TPS on the 88' finally gave up the ghost this last spring. Seemed fine except at just off of idle Id get a stumble. Figured it out one day holding throttle at different areas until I found the dead spot. Tried resetting the TPS, but it wouldnt even get close due to the damage being where it was.
Just my $.02.

I replaced/adjusted the TPS w/ a good spare and the problem didn't go away. This weekend I'll check the fuel pressure w/ my gauge and see if it's up to spec. Also will replace the coil/igniter, AFM and ECU and see if the problem persists. It sure is nice to have spare EFI parts. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I replaced the coil/igniter assy w/ one of my spares and the problem went away. Just to be sure, I reinstalled the original coil/igniter and the stumbling came back. So my friend's Runner is good to go and she's a happy camper. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
