Has anyone ever seen a 4runner turned into a pickup? Sitting around with my buddies and we started kickin around the idea of how hard it would be to cut the 4runner bed off and finish off the back of the cab to basically make a pickup truck cab out of the 4runner. Just wondering if anybody has ever seen it done or better yet done it themselves? Anybody got a cab for sale? Thanks for any help.

I was debating cutting my 4runner up so I'd have a functional bed. every now & then the idea starts to itch. I researched it pretty deep... You can move the power window behind the rear seats or put a regular pickup window in there, get a snap on soft cover jeep style.. flat bed.. lots of possibility with creativity. heres how it broke down for me: Pros: - Major weight reduction - pickup bed for hauling junk like tree limbs etc - One-of a kind truck Cons: - bed will be very small - when I go camping, I can't sleep in the truck - When shopping, can't lock stuff up - Lots of work
It's a close, creative, but still no cigar situation. the 4runner's wheel base isn't long enough for a 4door pickup. We have like a 106" wheel base. I measured my dad's S10 4door, somin like 128" wheel base. Same thing with a Xcab pickups 128". I came to the conclusion that being a SUV was more useful than being half SUV/pickup. B/c when you're inbetween you don't get the perks of either! Think about it for a few weeks before getting the grinder out!

I think the best option would be to put a Xcab cab on the 4runner frame and then shorten (bob) the bed to fit. That's a TON of work, money, time & don't even know how the legal aspects would work.... VIN plates, emissions, ETC. I imagine you'd keep the VIN of the Xcab truck b/c that's what people see going down the road??? I'm just gonna keep my 4runner... Hopefully within a few short years I'll be out of school & just buy an actual pickup to have. Either buy a cheap ***** cracker box or actually buy a new 1500 for a DD. Around here for $800 you can get a nice older used 2wd ***** work truck. Sorry about the long posts, just figured I'd tell ya what I think b/c i was in your situation a while back.

I have seen pics of an FJ80 done, it looked good. It could be done just the same w/a runner. I would pick up the rear half of a runner and experiment with it before hacking on your current ride.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

What year of 4Runner are you thinking about hacking? If its a 1st generation...sell it and just buy a pickup. There is enough demand for the 1st generation 4Runners that cutting one for experimentation would be a sin...unless its backend is FUBAR to begin with that is. With a truck, that came from the factory as a truck instead of a gender change (gonna have to figure out a term for this... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />) you will have a sealed cab and no hassles when and if it comes to sell.
If its a newer 4Runner....hackaway. Them things is too heavy anyways. Unless you are a soccer mom or equal....you'll get more use of it as a pickup.
Just my $.02!

The first gen 4Runners has an optional bed floor that bolts in where the rear seats are. Some of the cheaper 4Runners from 84-85 came with them. The front has a 4ö lip and is about 3ö away from my front seat when moved all the way back. I use mine most of the time and install the seats when friends are over.

I've been toying with the idea of taking the rest of the carpet out of the Runner. Rhino-lining the whole thing in grey to match the interior would work. I took all the carpet out of the back so it would'nt get wet wheelin. Theres a small bimini top from the cab to the roll bar now but it sure would be sweet to take it all out and not worry about it. I'm dreading putting the top back on. Handles better, milage is better. Aside from security I just don't see a realistic downside to keeping it off if theres a good soft top on there. Next gen top will have full height fold down bars and side windows but end behind the roll bar with a small tenaou (sp?) cover over the rear.
