What all should be done, checked, and what plugs/wires do you guys recommend?
I plan on:
Plugs Wires Cap and Rotor
What else would you guys do? My Troop has 157K and not sure of the last time it was tuned up. Any Tips to make the plug change and anything else easier? What Gap for plugs, etc?
Thanks.

I used AC delco plugs, factory heat range. The rotor and cap came from napa as did the plug wire set. I bought the highest quality set they offered. If you have a napa close by, I can post up the part numbers and prices for you if you would like. HTH - JL
Oh yeah - I believe the plug gap is 0.045", but cannot remember for sure. I'll have to look it up in the manual tonight.

It is the 2.8 and I just got through doing the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs, as well as fixing a vacuum line and that took care of my sputtering problem. Thanks for the input guys!

by the way, all my plugs were gapped at .050. I gapped the new plugs to .045, and auto zone told me .044. Anyway, don't know what was up with the orignal plugs like that.

could have been electrode wear. at any rate, excessive gap causes issues for sure, more energy to bridge the gap.
What color were they? White scale? Light brown?....JL

light brown to a small amount of dark brown. Pretty corroded electrode's that were a little white to alot light brown. My rotor was just about black and there was a ton of corrosion on the coil top under the wire. I cleaned and put that plug wire grease on all the tops before reinstalling the new wires.
What is the easiest way to check the timing on these trucks, do you know? ONEBADTROOPER thinks this is what might be causing my high idle.

sorry, don't know right off. I would have to look it up in the helms manual. I need to check mine also, but the truck is running real good and I don't think the timing is off.
I could get the procedure for you tomorrow if you would like.
