Picked up my new 4runner this weekend #636792 08/15/05 02:08 PM

Well it's new to me. It is a 1988 4runner that many of you may have seen in the for sale listings. I am going to be picking brains for a while as I get this thing working/running a little better. I feel I got a pretty good deal on it even though it is a little rough around the edges.

My first question is what type of muffler sounds the best on the 22re with a header and aftermarket cat. It has a nasty leak and booger welds all around the muffler. I tink I just want to replace it and the low hanging tail pipe.

next question is how hard is it to replace the oil pan without dropping the axle or raising the engine? I need to replace the gasket because it is leaking oil. Is there any secrets to a successful replacement. I have done probably 6 of them on small blocks and only 1 or 2 have not leaked. Thanks.

I don't see any way of getting the oil pan out without lifting the engine up or lowering the differential. I lowered the diff when I did the timing chain on my 87 22RTE a few years ago. And I still had to twist and turn the pan to clear the oil pickup. But it was worth the effort since the timing chain guide was in a million pieces in the pan and some were already stuck to the oil pickup. It really wasn't that big of a deal to drop the diff. I decided to unbolt the crossmember and let it drop straight down and it went back up into place easily.

I've heard all kindsa backyard exhausts around here on the 22re. Some straight pipe from the headers, some with Thrush glasspacks, what-have-you.
Personally...? I like the way a regular ol muffler sounds with 2 1/4" piping from the stock header back. There's one guy in town here who's set up his '90 (i think?) like that, sounds good. Can tell it's not stock, but doesn't have that nasty 4banger raspy rattle.

For doing the oil pan...dropping the front crossmember(4 bolts) and the 2 rear diff mounts (2 bolts) was the easiest way for me.
I'd recommend using Toyota FIPG (form in place gasket) if you're going to do it. It's good stuff. It's usually a dealer only item; there's a garage locally to me that specializes in toyotas, I generally get it from them because they're closer.

You have to make sure the edge of the bottom is oil free...other wise that FIPG stuff is not going to stick and you will have a leak again.

If you dont't like religeous holidays, go to work.Otherwise, let's call them what they are.
It's freedom OF religion not from.

Got another question. What would cause my 4runner to be difficult to start when cold and then hesitate and die when you give it gas until it warms up. After that it runs fine. Could it be the cold start switch? What does that switch do anyway?

Need a Spot
FIPG - there is a Permatex Ultra Grey that cross references the Toyota FIPG stuff. Works jsut fine. Toyota stuff comes witha neat key to wind up the tube tho...

Cold Start Time Switch (CSTS) - adds in the Cold Start Injector (CSI) (see intake plenum) to the other injector pulse wave forms. Basically adds extra gas when COLD.

Pull the plug ot the CSTS and test for continuity when cold - or something like that - read the Factory Sercvice Manual (FSM) - worth every penny for that book...

man Im getting OLD...

I am thinking of putting on one of Flowmasters new quiet mufflers, I can't think of the name though. I want a welded construction heavy duty muffler so the 'ol thrush turbos and the stock mufflers are out. I cut off my tail pipe today cause the pipe is busted off the muffler inside the housing. It sounds a little better now, not quite as sick <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" /> I tell you what That little 22re is a runnin little fart. I had a Trooper with the 2.8 v6 and 33's with 4.56's and I don't think it could keep up with my 4runner on 35's. As far as I know the gears are stock. It makes me wonder how it can have so much more power than the v6 did with lower gears and shorter tires. Both trucks weigh about the same. It must be that the 22re is as or a little more torquey than the 2.8.
Even before I bought it I have made plans to SAS it and bob the tail. I have a Dana 44 ready to go in. All I need is ubolts, steering and gears. I will be running the rancho waggy springs on it. I will start a new thread when I begin to mod it soon.

Later
