Hey Roger...ya, the other one (Century 131B) was getting scratched and dusty. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" /> It runs off of 2 12volt batteries in series that will be located where the transformer was. Yes, the wire feed motor will run off of one of the batteries (12v) but that's with no available adjustment. A simple reostat(pot) will not work acceptable due to varying loads and inconsistent wire speeds. The voltage reg is the trick. More to come after I get free time(too many gear installs lately) ZUK

The Hobart wire feeder I have has an adjustable wire feed speed. And most importantly it uses a voltage sense circuit to vary the wire speed to maintain a constant arc voltage while welding. Might not be quite so critical running off batteries, but when powering the wire feeder off a constant current source, like an arc or TIG welder, it can really improve the weld consistency.

OK so I'm confused. Did you have a century 131b welder, then get the hobart flux wire later? What was wrong with the century? Or was it the other way around? What do you gain by mixing and matching parts?

I had some money burning a hole in my pocket. The 131 still works well....but the unit is mainly plastic...I see some issues with pieces breaking off potentially.
Don't get me wrong, the 131 is kick-ass but I have been toying with the idea converting a 120vac flux core version to 24vdc....and if it would even work. I have been thinking about this ever since I bought the 1999 red TJ brand new.
Well, I now know it works well. It's possible to get the MIG100 on a real sale for 70 or 80 bucks.....and order 2 SLA 12 volt batteries for 30 each on-line.
The 131b is no longer available from harbor freight($299).....I checked last year and the it can be found on the internet for about 500~600. ZUK
