I'll have to update my notes about 96-00 bellhousing when I buy one, lucky I didn't buy one yet.

Yeah a 2.8 might be OK for a W56, but if you run a modded out 3.4 you will smoke a W56 trans. A W56 or any toyota trans for that matter is the same as a W56 in another model, like 4runner for instance.
