Getting the Wheeling Fever

95 4runner 3vze w/ a manual tranny.

I had to have my 4runner towed back to Wilmington today. I was up visiting my gradparents and to make a long story short... something bad happened in my transfer case. I will be working on the truck in my granddads yard, so I am looking for shortcuts, can I seperated the transfer case from the tranny with it in the truck, or does the transmission need to come out also?
