Picked up a 1987 Dodge Raider 2.6 with stick:

Gas gauage doesn't work
Drive 250 miles and refill w/12 gallons highway and stock 225's = 20+ mpg

Drive 200 miles dirt/street/highway with my 31's, refill w/11 gallons twice = +/- 18 mpg

Still better than my poor Montero

Somebody told me that the fuel economy is worse with the Straight-4 than with the V6, ... giving the reason that the 4s had to fight harder to push the weight, ...

Nope. In general, engines give better fuel economy when they are under more load. There are many many examples where the "optional" V8 gets poorer mileage than the "standard" V6.

The other issue here is just that the mitsu 4 cyl in the old Monty's seems to be less efficient than tht V6. Probably due to the carburator.

Below is a list of mileage on my recent trip to and from Colorado on 32" M/T tires - Speed was between 65 and 80, with 70 likely about average and the A/C was running most all the time. The lower numbers were either climbing in elevation or higher speed and the higher numbers were either losing elevation or holding mostly to 65mph. Below 65 should yield better numbers but I was in a hurry. Base ignition timing is set at 7 degrees BTDC, but seeing the way the timing is controlled by the ECU, I'm not sure there's any benefit to setting it at the upper limit - maybe.... I'd have to reset it to 3 BTDC and see if the curve moves down by 4 degrees overall.

i get around 15 mpg, some times 14, sometimes 16 doing 95% city driving. it can get as good as 21 mpg on road trips.



i also have a fuel related question... what type of fuel do you 2nd gen SR owners put in your engines? i wonder if that has an effect on fuel economy.

Diesels are the way to go. My '86 Ford Ranger with Mitsu 2.3TD gets 38mpg on the highway. My wife's 3/4 ton '97 GMC Suburban 6.5TD 4wd got 22mpg on the drive home from Naples, FL a couple of weekends ago. The PO verified he got the same mileage driving it from Maine to Naples two weeks beforehand. (3.42 rear) He towed a car on a tow dolly for part of the trip and still got 19mpg.

Diesels extract more energy from petroleum than gas burners. They will also run on a variety of fuels and blends.
