I do not know whether the newer remotes will work or not. Here is the info on the back of my remote for my 95 SR. The Mits. dealer gave it to me after I purchased my used Montero from them several years ago. They had a whole cardboard box full of various kinds. The dealer's mechanic could not program it through the under dash data port. I had to remove the right rear inside plastic side panel and reach up past the rear speaker to move the switch to the program position on the remote receiver and then back to normal position after it sensed the transmitter signal from the remote. Programming directions are in the shop manual and the dealer ran me a copy. Hope this helps.
