How can you tell if you have a fixed yoke or a slip yoke?

Ya, one of these days I'd like to try to convert it over to fixed yoke just so if something happens to the rear shaft, I've still got the front to get around on. You fixed yoke guys got it made.

I haven't actualy pulled it out yet to look But its a 2.8 V6 engine , and auto tranny if that helps to identify it.How hard would it be to convert to a fixed yoke if I don't have one?

It'll be noticeable. You don't have to pull it out. If the driveshaft is bolted onto the transmission like it is to the differential, then it's fixed. If not, then you've got a slip yoke. Don't know how hard it is. There was at least one thread around here showing how to do it. It looks daunting, but it might not be too bad.

I haven't really looked at the one on the 2.8 , but I know the one on the 2.6 is a slip yoke.I'll take a wild guess and say the 2.8 is the same

I'm not sure if you can make the assumption of fixed vs slip yoke based on the engine you have... but I could be wrong. As its already been said, slip yokes slide into the tcase. fixed yokes have a flange coming out of the tcase to which the driveshaft yoke bolts.
to convert to a fixed yoke, you'll need to replace the back cover with one from a fixed yoke case as well as a matching gear on the top most gear cluster inside the case. its not too difficult, but does involve tearing around inside the tcase, however, not as difficult as install Teralow gears. There have been a few others that convert to fixed yoke using the slip yoke parts, however, this is much more difficult and custom than swapping fixed yoke parts.

Ok , I plan on installing Teras anyway while I do my engine swap and the tranny/transfer case is out.Now , if I do need to convert , where and how would I go about finding the parts I need to make it into a fixed yoke?
Actualy I am gonna run outside right now and take a peek at whats under there and see if its fixed or not.Take the uncertainty out of the equation.

Ok , just went and climbed under the truck for a look see. While I was under there , I measured the driveshaft(s) from the rear end to the transfer case , and it comes out to 42 1/2" if that sounds right , where it bolts at the rear to where it bolts at the transfer case.
It is a fixed yoke by the way , it doesn't slide into the case at all So , I guess I don't have to worry about converting it over at all , just slipping in the Teras when I get them.

I haven't seen any manual 1st gen troopers with a fixed yoke--with the possible exception of the RS, which I just haven't ever looked at. All the autos I've seen have been fixed.
And this isn't to say there aren't some out there, I'm just stating what I have seen.
