Engine upgrade for 1988 Trooper #640283 08/24/05 04:24 PM

I have a 1988 Isuzu Trooper with the 2.6 and an auto tranny. I would like more power, but can't decide on what size of engine to go with. Anyone that has tackled this problem please give me some ideas. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Without doing an entire driveline swap, you've got the most powerful engine that'll bolt up to your transmission. If doing a driveline swap, then it's up to your imagination, fab skills, and wallet. The 2.6 is a good little motor. Very torquey. It can be built up to run pretty good. Check out houlster's website, www.houlster.com, and you'll see what can be done with forced induction.

You're right in that the 2.6 is a good little engine. It should serve my needs. I'm just looking to do a little mudding. What size tires would you recommend considering it has no lift kit or would you stay with the stock tires?

Body Damage is Cool
I would reccommend 38s and just cutting all the metal that rubs

Will the 2.6 turn the 38's without putting a lot of strain on the drivetrain?

I think that Chris was pulling your leg without using any graemlins.

While 38s might be optimal for mudding, there is no way that your stock front-end would stand up to the abuse.

Realistically, anything bigger than 33s is really pushing the envelope for your IFS.

I'm new to this, but thought that sounded kind of extreme. But, I'm glad he got a good laugh and I learned something.

On this site, do not direct that graemlin at other people directly. I have edited your post.

Sorry about that, I wasn't thinking. It was meant to be in good nature.

You can swap the bellhousing for a Jeep for the 2.5 and 4.0 or for a Toyota piece for the 22r/re
