Thanks Salvy and Jerry! I appreciate the info. The 2.2 is a bit lower in HP than the 2.3 but that's to be expected, but it wasn't as much of a difference as I might have suspected. I was really suprised that the 2.2 TQ was not much higher than the 2.2. I could live with the lower HP if I gained substantial TQ increase. I guess I might just check into the 2.8. I've been doing some browsing through some Aussie and British boards to get more info on the 2.8 as well. Any additional info you can provide would be appreciated. Do you happen to know the HP and TQ values for the 2.8? If not, I'll browse around. I think the 2.8 gets about 25 - 35 MPH depending on the vehicle, the driving conditions, and driving style. Does anyone have any anecdotal information about either the 2.3 gas or the 2.2 TD? I never drove the truck with the 2.3 to find out because the original engine needed work when I got it and I never finished the rebuild. My old '84 1.9L was really good on fuel economy for a 4X4 and not terrible to get moving, not a V6 or V8 of course, but tolerable. My V6 Montero only gets around 17-18 MPG but it's also pretty heavy.

I saw on a FAQ post somewhere (maybe here?) that the '86 had a 21.9 gallon fuel tank? If so, that's pretty good. My Montero only has around a 24 gal tank for the V6 to suck from. I don't think the old '84 1.9L had but around a 13 or so gallon tank but I might be mistaken as it's been over 10 years since I drove it and since it was drivable (another project but that one is for my dad).

Salvy, I figure that whatever diesel engine I might get that I will try to acquire the tranny and maybe even other stuff such as the motor mounts and crossmembers if possible just so I can compare or even fabricate if needed.

Jerry, I noticed you were posting about the crossmember and hydraulic/cable issue on another thread. That's interesting and good knowledge to have if this comes to fruition. I take it the diesel has a hydraulic clutch assembly? My montero does too. I think I might be savy enough to make a conversion if needed but it is good to know I have such knowledgable folks to give advice.

Jerry, will that a/c compressor I bought from you still fit the diesel engine? Whatever I do, I've got to have air down here in hell, er... the south. I can't believe I was born and raised here because it seems the older I get the more I dislike the heat, or maybe that's just because I let myself get lazy and sit in a/c all the time?. Do you still have that axle assembly from the 88-91 Trooper with the LSD and disc brakes? I've got other things to wory about first bt I was just curious.

Thanks again for all the info!

Jonathan
