It will lock into 4wd but the hubs click and then when I try to take out the passenger side stuck in the lock position.

For starters, you have manual hubs, not auto hubs. If you have to turn a dial, they are no longer considered to be automatic in their function.

Is there an illustration somewhere showing how they go back together?

There are great illustrations in any of the repair manuals, and detailed reassembly instructions in the factory Helm manual. It is probably much advised you find a picture as describing it via text over the internet is rather, um, difficult.

Please don't tell me to replace them, because I know they are not bad.

Well, they may not be bad, but they are definatly not working. Luckily, the parts in the hub are harder than the end of the axle shaft. Worst case, you tore up the end of the CV axle and it will have to be replaced.

I would start by making sure there are c-clips on the end of both axles and that the axles have not pulled out of the hub far enough to prevent proper engagement with the hubs.
