I've seen several different published numbers for gas mileage on the Direct Injection engine but I'm not sure which ones are accurate. Can anyone tell me what kind of real-world mileage they are getting from the DI?
Thanks!

While doing even more research I see that some of my confusion is that the 2wd DI is listed at 18/23 while the 4wd DI is 17/21.
Are the 4wd components that much heavier, or is that the mileage when it is actually in 4wd?

That's why I was wondering what the reality is. If the gas mileage is not any better than my 96, than that is one less item in the "plus" column on a '04 that I'm looking at.

Are the 4wd components that much heavier, or is that the mileage when it is actually in 4wd? More than just the weight... Due to a lack of manual hubs, the 4x4 components are always turning - creating additional load/drag.
Six Isuzus, so far... still have three of them.

According to this page:http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/images/icons/lightbulb.gif lightbulb http://users4.ev1.net/~sanaghan/main/Vehicle/Index.htmThere is this link that summarizes how the EPS generates the mileage numbers. http://users4.ev1.net/%7Esanaghan/main/Vehicle/Isuzu_FAQ.htm#How%20EPA%20Calc%20MileageThere's also a link to this article (summary below): Csaba Csere, editor-in-chief of Car and Driver Magazine, comments that car companies have to report the mileage reported by the EPA test. Sll vehicles perform below their EPA mileage ratings in real-world conditions, but hybrids more so. When the law was put in place, government never though that car companies would want to report a LOWER gas mileage. Honda and Toyota are both fighting to report more real world conditions (Like numbers with the headlights, fan or A/C turned on) and "Gallons per 1000 miles", the Big 3 are resisting. The EPA decsion is currently on-going as of Aug 30, 2005. ....and sorry, I haven't really measured the gas mileage. I'd guess I do pretty well, around 22. I think for "normal" Asian vehicles, the gas mileage is relativly accurate. I've heard from cruising boards, e-pinions, and other spots like magazines that report real world gas mileage during reviews, that Jeeps get quite a bit lower, Wranglers especially so (2 friends with unmodified jeeps confirm that). But that's not why you buy a Wrangler or any SUV. If you're looking to use 3-5 MPG difference as a reason to get a new Rodeo vs a paid off one, it will be a very long return on investment. For most people, the hybrid option is the same--very long payoff for some, and no payoff for others. Of course, as gas keeps rising, the math changes. My motorcycle paid for itself at $1.30 per gallon. (Gas/basic maint/insurance). At $2.50 per gallon, I'm slowly reclaiming what I spent to purchase it, too.

If you're looking to use 3-5 MPG difference as a reason to get a new Rodeo vs a paid off one, it will be a very long return on investment. For me the gas mileage is only one small factor. I'm just trying to justify buying a 2004 DI Rodeo when I have a 96 Rodeo that works perfectly fine. The 96 does have 135,000 miles on it and surface rust on the frame but it is also paid off. I've also put a good amount of time and money into modifying it. So it comes down to how much longer I think it will last and whether it is worth still doing some of the big expensive projects (ARB lockers, winch, etc) with that many miles on it. Or, whether it is worth the new car payments to get a vehicle that will last many more years (only 15K miles on it) but that I can't modify for a couple of years because it is still under warranty...and on and on

If I don't drive (but my wife does) we can get ~20 mpg average. Now, I get about 16-20 depending on how I feel that day.
Like anything else, YMMV. If you keep your speed down on the hiway, you'll do better. If you lift it, you'll do worse. Any suspension mod, or tire change, will likely result in worse mileage.
Now, I've been doing some reading, and a few calculations. If I'm correct, this induction system should doo better with a different filter piping system. I haven't tested it though.
P.S. I'd like to put on manual hubs, one day. I believe this to be the best thing we can do for better mileage.

According to the display on the dash, we've been averaging 17.7 mpg in our 4wd Axiom with DI. On long trips though, it's gotten 19-20.

We just tested our newly purchased used 2004 Rodeo with V6 DI and we got 13.6 mpg in the city.
