Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a '00 Rodeo V6 4WD.
Lately it seems like my front end has become pretty bouncey.
Think it's time to replace the shocks. I know I should replace all 4, but it seems like the front end is really in need.
I don't do a lot of 4 wheeling and don't really want to stiffen up the ride.
Any suggestions as to what would be a good replacement shock. Should I just get factory replacements?

I went with ES3000 ProComp Shocks when I replaced the originals.

They have worked out very good for the Trooper. Before I replaced the shocks, the Trooper would sway way too much when cornering. Since I replaced the shocks it corners with much more control. I have no complains.

You can get 4 for 135.00 at most places, including the boots.

The Rancho 9000X adjustable shocks may be the best for you. It sounds like you want a good ride as a daily driver. You can dial them down for as soft a ride as you want.

They need slight modifications to fit (very minor) and sometimes they can knock against the front sway bar (mine hasn't for a long time). They are more expensive than non-adjustable shocks. Check them out on Matt's site

I don't recommend Rancho 9000's. I have them and they aren't all they're cranked up to be. Their settings are a neat concept, but when I set them for soft, I have too much bounce, and when I set for firm, too harsh a ride. I've tried just about every combo possible with their settings. I plan to switch back to OME shocks and sell my Ranchos.

The Edelbrocks on my son's '97 provide a nice combination ride. I think the ES3000's or the Monroe Sensa tracs would be a good budget improvement.

When I put my lift on my 98 Rodeo I origianlly went with ProComp ES3000s, in the front they were OK, in the rear they were way to stiff and the ride was horible. I changed the rear to RS9000s and was able to find a good setting with a nice ride. I would not suggest Procomp shocks in the rear becuse their valving is the same for compresson and rebound, this in NOT want to you want for a good ride.

There are two things about Rancho 9000X which make them the best shocks and which overweight all their disadvantages:

1. You can have them dialed according to your preferences and, even more important, you can dial rear and front shocks differently. From my experience, it's very important. Rodeo needs front shocks stiffer than rear, for best possible handling and comfort.

2. Ranchos are all available in multiple sizes and variants. You can choose exact size you need, according to your private specs. This is what I did when I needed the longest shocks which fit my custom Rodeo suspension. I just measured everything and ordered the closest application.

Thanks for the replies.

Been thinking about the Monroe Sensa Tracs, may just go with those.

I know that one of the Tech's at Sam's Offroad has them on a late model Trooper and says they really are great shock for the money, and well built. Sears is having a promo now with Buy 3, 1 Free, plus 30% off installation. Plus, if you don't like, take em back and Sears will refund 100%. How can you beat that.

I have used Trekmasters and OME. The OME are by far the better shock for heavy use. For your needs I would suggest Sensatrac or Trekmaster. I have heard good things about the Edelbrock but the warrranty may be useless. The Trekmasters were great but the warranty is invalid unless you send the shock back to the factory. The shock cannot be sent back without their permission!

i have been doing a bunch of different shocks lately. So not all the shocks i offer are currently featured on the site.

some of the recent popular choices are:

Rancho 9000x
Old Man Emu
Eddelbrock monotubes
pro-comp remote resivoir
Bilstein 5100's
pro-comp MX6

i also do procomp 3000 and 9000 ....always a budget favorite

anlong with skyjacker hydro and nitro.........and the new Platinums are way cool BTW.

i have done KYB's, Doestech...........really i can get anything.

i run Eddelbrocks on my ford....would reccomend
9000x's om my 93 rs........great ride.
OME's on my wife's Discovery....great ride also

not sure that helps, just throwing in my .02 <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

i guess "the best" just depends on your budget.
