Hi everyone. i just found this site after some moderate searching for some trooper tech. i have been going to itog.com for a few years but didnt know there were other site(s). anyways, i have a 4x4 trooper S with a manual trans. it was my wife's DD until she finally bought a new car. so it is now my toy so far it has a waag front grill guard, waag side steps, waag rear bumper guard and waag taillight guards. i know, big mods right? also have a monster K&N cone filter with piping. I plan to raise it 3" and slap some 285/75s on the stockies, then probably go to Rockcrawlers. i spoke with the guy at independent4x and learned much about lifting it. i plan to twist the torsion bars and flip the bjs. out back, i was going to go with ome coils and spacers. ind4x said i should go with 1" spacer and 912 coils to achieve the 3" in the rear...which is a little different from what i found from searching. anywho, i also got the crazy idea in my head to add some air shocks to the trooper when i saw that they sell front mounts (to place rear shocks up front). i did a search on air shocks and read about air springs some of you guys have. i couldnt find a definitive answer so ill ask this: do the airsprings add any lift to the stock coils? in other words, can i be cheap and just get the air springs without having to buy the coils and spacers for $300? or are the air springs not going to accomplish my goal just by themselves... i was also thinking, after viewing some of your guys' pics, that when the vehicle is articulating(?) the body will remain level while the suspension twists all up. im wondering if the big fat tires would come up on one side and rub on the fenders.. are the air springs just an all around bad idea for off roading. i plan to do this with my trooper as i have done some light off roading with it before. i am not concerned with towing or heavy loads.

Welcome to the board, I'll let some of the trooper guys answer your question's. The "guy" is Matt he owns Independant4x,he is one of just 3 or 4 vendors for Isuzu's.He's a good guy as well as the rest of them. They all come and go on this site from day to day. As for air springs,I don't think you can achieve the offroad worthiness you want going with a set of bags for under $300,does that also include air compressor? I have seen air bags offroad but they were extremely $$
Anyways top of the morning and once again welcome

I highly doubt you can build a respectable 'bag system for anywhere near the price of a basic lift. And the longer coils + spacers rear; t-bar crank + bj flip and spacers front is a tried and true way of giving Troopers more altitude. As for the 912's, different people like different spring rates to achieve the height and ride characteristics they desire. The 912's are a popular choice for sure; but I know people have used other OME springs as well. The nice thing about coil suspensions is that ride height can be fine-tuned without further affecting the spring rate, by using spacers. Welcome to the board. You can really trust Matt at Indy4X. Listen to his advice.

OME 912s (great springs BTW) will get you 1.5" lift at most, might be closer to 1"...so with 1" spacers it is a stretch to call it 3", might want to get 2" spacers instead. I was just chatting with Matt about this yesterday. You might get a little taller with OME 919s, but they are stiffer too.
With 3" suspension lift and 285/75s you should have very minimal tire contact if any at full stuff. Many guys have run them on Troopers.

Welcome, Glad to here that there is another Trooper, retired from D/D duty that was handed down to the husband OME 912's (GREAT BY THE WAY stiffer than stock, but not by much, *maybe it was the new shocks??)and a T-bar job, was enough for me, unless you are thinking major SOA kinda stuff. The 285's will fit with ease. At full stuff, I have several inches of room in the fender-wells in front and back. Air shocks? You mean like airbags? No idea man.
1995 Trooper 3.2 single, 5 speed, OME 912's, T-bar crank, G80, 285 M/T's, custom dents, random rust
1999 Trooper 3.5, auto, TOD, K&N, tint (wife's car can't improve it)
1988 Trooper LS 5 speed SOLD
