My Taco has a tragic rack and pinion issue (excess vertical play in the rack rod itself, the bushings are worn, driver's side). But this is news to me. Just what exactly is a 'steering relay rod'? The shaft extending from steering wheel to steering box? Or the middle part of the IFS tie rod, which in my case has been made into a barbeque or Chevy or something by now?

Doesn't extend back to my 87, eh?

tacos have a rack and pinion and therefore no relay rod....

Below is the reply from Toyota when I emailed them about the recall:

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
We appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiry about the 50N - Steering Relay Rod Replacement Special Service Campaign (SSC).

Toyota will launch a SSC in mid-September 2005 to replace the Steering Relay Rod on certain 1989 û 1995 Model Year Truck 4WD, 1990 û 1995 Model Year 4Runner 2WD and 4WD, and 1993 û 1998 Model Year T100 4WD vehicles. On the involved vehicles, if the steering wheel is repeatedly turned under certain conditions where high steering effort and power assist are required, for instance, when fully turning the wheel while the vehicle is stopped, a fatigue crack may develop in the steering relay rod due to insufficient strength. In the worst case, the steering relay rod may fracture, causing a loss of vehicle steering control and thus increasing the possibility of a crash.

The SSC will be performed at NO CHARGE to vehicle owners. The anticipated repair time is approximately two hours. However, an additional 1 1/2 hours may be necessary for front end alignment. The dealership may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based on their workload.

We researched your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), 000000000000, and determined your 1994 Truck is involved in the 50N SSC. Once you receive the SSC notification letter, please contact your local dealership to schedule an appointment to have the SSC performed. If you believe there is currently a safety concern with your vehicle, please contact your local dealership as soon as possible.

There have been no reported injuries or accidents related to this condition.

We thank you for your understanding as we work toward resolving this issue. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us with file #000000000000000.

I don't think that should matter unless you've changed anything about the steering components they are replacing. I don't think they care about a BL, a suspension maybe, depending on how much modification you've done to the steering. But others should chime in, because I can't be too sure.

Right... I was responding to a Taco question, and describing a Taco steering issue I had, not related... then confirming '87s were excluded. Not that it matters, the only '87 part on my '87 steering is the box and steering column.

I doubt that a lift would disqualify your rig. I have had a lift on my rig for almost 11 yrs(1000's of miles on the trail) before the rod broke. If a susp. lift had any significant impact on the part breaking, it would have happened long before now. The problem is that it is a cast piece and not mild streel, so there isn't any give, just fracture tham break. Mine sheered off right at the pitman arm, where it is the thinnest. I had planned to have one made from steel, just haven't gotten around to it. Right now I am using one off of an '88 4-Runner.

The reason why no injuries/accidents have been reported is no one has linked the two together. When mine broke I just figured that it was do to 15 yrs of wheeling, it wasn't until looking for one at the wrecking yard that I relized it wasn't from wheeling when I saw a 2nd Gen Runner with a crushed pass. side and the same broken steering rod(centerlink), and no evidence it had ever seen the dirt/rocks. I haven't been able to get by the dealer yet, I am curious to see what they have come up with for the fix. I have 2 to get done, and one isn't running.

funny, i just replaced tie rod ends less than a month ago. not with toy parts (no time to wait for dealer to get them in...). hope that doesn't cause problems if my rig is covered...

Surfrunner, you should be fine with the recall. They are replacing that part that the tie rod ends attaches to. I've seen the notice that they provide to the mechanics at my local dealer.
SAS folks don't qualify...we don't have that part anymore.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

hey, i've just call toyota canada & got confirmed that i fall under the recall campaign. Sweet. Question is, does it come with a free alignment too? That would be great as I haven't had one for a over a year! (Hope they'll figure things out with the 32's, balljoint spacers & cranked torsion bars..."most importantly, hope they won't reset the front end back to the stock height...")

Yup. It's as free with the center link replacement as it is with the link, tie rod ends, ball joint spacers, etc. etc.
