Hi all,
I'm not on this board much, but I wanted to share some info on my NP205 install into my Trooper.
I picked up a divoced NP205 t-case (Dodge - right side drop) and will be installing it behind my exhisting tranny and t-case to use as a doubler. I will also be twin-sticking it just for a little extra fun.
No pics yet, 'cuz I haven't got much done yet. I removed the rear driveshaft and cut the crossmember that the carrier bearing bolts to.
I'll weld some mounts to the frame, then bolt the 205 to the frame and start taking measurements for my 3 new driveshafts. (One for the rear, one for the front, and an intermediate shaft from the output of the stock tranny to the input of the 205.)
Being that my rig is a '87, it's got the older style tranny/t-case where the front output lobe bolts to the side of the tranny. I have to cut the front output off so that its not in the way of the front driveshaft coming from the 205. This should be fairly easy to cut and weld (or drill and tap) a plate.
Once mounted to the frame, I'll take some pics. I have a 2" body lift, but I'll probably pound the floor up only an 1" to make the bottom of the 205 sit at the same level as the original t-case.
The NP205 is only a 2:1 reduction, but it's still twice as good as what I have now! I can't get terra lows for my tranny, but if I could I'd only have 3.07:1. The NP205 will give me almost 4:1.
I should make some more progress this weekend.

Prepare for a hernia, that's a heavy sumbitch!

You should be able to just unbolt the 'transfer case' lump that sticks out of your front gearbox... and fabricate a simple cover plate to seal in the juice. No cutting required!

Are your back-seat passengers willing to shift gears for ya?

Have you double-checked the width of the darn thing? Might be tight, and you'll need to watch rear driveshaft angle, as well.

All that said, sounds like a fun budget project! Post up pictures as you progress!

Thinking about this myself. be sure to post pics I have the MUA5, so I'd have to tear into the case to remove the front output and lob off a chunk of the case, but I do have the option of the 3:1's. How far behind the stock case will you be hanging the 205?

Sorry Karl I didn't get time to load those pics from yesterday, my dogs ambushed me when I got home I'll try and get it done and posted today after work. Your project is going to be pretty unique in the 'Zu world...

thats what I was thinking.. the NP205 is more beef than an isuzu driveline could ever need! there are other divorce case options that would yeld a better low range without all the weight.

Off the top of my head, I know there's a divorce mount kit for toyota cases, nissan had a divorced case, and there are divorced 203's. What about dana 20? I can't remember if there was one or not...

yes and no. there is a D24, which is basically like a D20 divorced.

dang. did a little search and the d24 (in fords, couldn't find any other application) has a low of only 1.86:1, and is driver side drop. routing exhaust would be fun with it and the diff/driveshaft on the same side.

No doubt...about 125 lbs...I use a jack to lift it!

I wish that were true, but the shifter is attached to that lump.

Fits with plenty of room on both sides of the frame rail. The rear drive shaft u-joint will be a couple inches forward of where the original carrier bearing was, and at the same height.

Yes, there are plenty of other options for other divorced t-cases...Toyota, nissan t-100l, and some others, but here are my reasons:
1. Plenty of available parts
2. Price was right
3. Beefy...I'll never worry about braking it. Axles are another story.
4. Easy to mount
5. Twin stick-able (again...just for fun)
6. No cooling issues
7. Common u-joints

Heavy, yes, but I'm a big dude and can loose or gain 100 lbs in a month.
The trooper will hardly notice 150 lbs....I got the 2.3l engine...I got all the power I need!

Once I get the original front output flange out of the way, I'm gonna measure the needed length of the front shaft. I hoping that the front and rear shaft can be the same length, which means only carrying one spare. Right now the short shaft will be about 10" long. The case will sit a few inches behind the torsion bar adjusters.
