I have a 94 Trooper that needs a whole new exhaust system. I was just looking for a few suggestions on something other than OME setup. Thanks.

Rob:

I'm looking at same thing.

On my last '95 trooper (SOHC), I added a catco cat, 3" flowmaster clone, and 3" piping. It was loud, smelled bad, and performance suffered one system was broken in.

This time, I'm thinking that I'll go w/ a catco, 2.5 inch dynamax, and 2.5" piping.

I'm interested in what others recommend.

On my 99 Trooper I had a Dynomax Super Turbo (#17748 I think) with 2.5" pipe, which I liked very much. Nice deep sound (for a V6, anyway) on acceleration, and pretty quiet on the highway. And by testing I have seen, they are one of the best flowing mufflers out there.

My 93 is in dire need of new exhaust, and I am going to try a similar setup, but with 2.25" pipe and the 17747 muffler, IF that long 20" muffler will fit under the considerably shorter RS. I just don't think 2.5" pipe is needed for the 3.2L.

Need a Spot
ill be exhaust shopping soon as well. anyone know what the stock piping is for the 3.2? and what optimal size would be? i was thinking of just tossing the Dynomax in with the stock piping cuz i didnt think the piping would really make any difference in this application, but that's just pure out-of-my-arse speculation <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

On my 2.8 now 3.4 v6, 2.5" catback and Walker turbo muffler has served me well. Not noisy, pleasant burble at low rpms.

There is a guide chart to optimal pipe size here: http://www.dynomax.com/techsupport.stm

Is there any huge difference between the Dynomax and the Flowmaster mufflers?

yes. there is a HUGE difference. I've run both and in my opinion the Flowmasters should be limited to v8's They seem to preform well on 8 cyl engines but poorly on under powered v6's and 4cyl'ers. I am currently running a Dynomax fully welded super turbo on my new 4runner with 2.25" from the header to the muffler and then 2.5" out from the muffler. The only reason I am running 2.5" after the muffler is because I got a really good deal on the muffler and it was 2.5" in and out. On a v6 I would go 2.5" front to back and on a 4cyl I would run 2.25" front to back. Pipe size matters as much as the muffler. Too small and it is too restrictive and too big it is not restricted enough. You need some back pressure for your engine to run right. It also helps to keep it as bend free as possible and only use mandrel bends

Actually, I think the Flowmaster 50 SUV series sounds great with the 3.2. Not too loud, but it can be loud enough when you want it to be. Matt has it on his site. 50 series

FWIW I measured the stock muffler...it is exactly 20" long, so the 20" Dynomax should fit no problem, even under an RS Trooper.

So, my Trooper is at the shop and will get the above muffler/tailpipe put on in the next few days, but I will be out of town on business until Friday...I can report how it is performing then.

Regarding Flowmaster...I've heard it said that Flowmaster is more about sound than performance...but have no facts to back that up, so as usual take internet scuttlebut with a large grain of salt...
