Getting the Wheeling Fever

The other day, my oil pressure dropped to "0". I immediatly pulled over and filled w/ oil and stopped down the road and topped it off will more oil. All in all it took 3 quarts of oil. I have a fresh rebuilt 258 in my CJ. My question is what is causing me to loose or burn oil. There are no leaks whatsoever. I've got it dialed in and running great. So where is the oil going? Thanks in advance for any help.

One man's rebuilt is not positively the next man's! Give all details of the rebuild... What about the head? Did you rebuild it COMPLETLY? Was the block bored and NEW pistons installed? The oil goes away from the valve guides and the rings.. A rebuild of all the other parts will allow the engine to last lonmger but will not stop the burning of oil. If the old pistons were used the type of rings used is of upmost importance.. HARD CHROME rings will burn oil in this instance for maybe 30,000 miles? When you said '0' pressure my first thought was that you may have main bearing troubles but the lack of oil in the pan and no leaks can only mean that it is going out the tail pipe. Sometimes it is difficult to see the blue smoke in your mirror as you are driving. Have someong follow you as you put your rig through the gears. One problem that I have run across with some of the 70's era Ford motors was bad valve guides. On compression as in low gear down a hill, oil would be pumped through the guides and into the cylinders and burned. In a word, that SUCKED.

I agree there jimbo on the rings, either theres a couple not seated, or the wrong prep work was done on cyl. walls for type of rings you are using. If this is the case do a comp. check an youll see the cyl. that is failing. Ignore this situation an you could be doing another engine swap.

3 quarts??!! holy cow, that's insane!! i've driven a few check the gas and fill the oil rigs in my time, but they didn't owe anyone anything. 1 quart for 1000 miles is bad, but 3 quarts? maybe someone is playing with you and drained some out. you'd leave a cloud hanging in intersections and it would be no mystery at that rate unless you waited 3000 miles with your fresh motor to change the oil, but i doubt that... how many miles to 3 quarts??
