I was reading here the other day and came to wonder just when this motor first arrived.
Likely this is a question more for Jerry Lemond, but can anyone give me a bit of history on this motor, such as when was it first made, and made for what, etc?

Just curious. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Body Damage is Cool
ACTUALLY THE ENG STARTED LIFE AS A 1.9 IN THE EARLY 70,S AND POSSIABLY EVEN FARTHER BACK THAN THAT, IF YOU LOOK AT THE BARE BLOCK THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS AND BRACKET AND CASTING ATTACHMENTS, THAT WERE NEVER USED IN THE AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATION,I STARTED WITH ISUZU IN 1980 AND WE DIDN,T START TEACHING ON THE IND ENGS SOMETIME UP IN THE LATE 90,S, BUT ALL OF THE PARTS AND TRAINING PRIOR TO OUR GETTING THEM, WAS DONE IN NOVI MICH, AT THE FACILITY THERE , AND THAT IS ALL THEY DONE WAS IND APPLICATION FOR THE 2 CYL UP TO THE REAL BIG ONES , THEY EVEN HAD A LARGE ENG DYNO THERE THAT THEY COULD RUN AN ENG ON TO FIND A RUNNING PROB, OR EMMISSION VERIFICATION ON, INDUSTRIAL ENG WITH A GEAR DRIVE PUMP AND WAS USED IN ALL KINDS OF STATIONARY APPLICATIONS THEN A 2.2 ENG AND THE THERE WAS A FEW 2.4 ENGS , AN AWFUL LOT OF THESE ENG ARE USE IN BOBCAT STYLE SMALL WHEEL LOADERS AND SUCH, TONS OF THEM ARE USED IN GENERATOR SETS ,BUT FAR AND AWAY THE LARGEST USER OF THESE ENGS IN THE C223 VERSION AT ABOUT 50.000 UNITS A YEAR WAS THERMO KING WHO BUILDS THEM INTO REFRIGERATOR UNITS FOR TRACTOR TRAILERS , THEY YEARS AGO USED THE SMALL MERCEDES ENG , WE WERE TOLD AT ONE TIME THOSE ENGS WOULD NOT LAST THE NO OF FULL LOAD CONTINUES HOURS AS THE ISUZU ENG , AS FAR AS VEH USE THE U.S. GOT THEM IN 1980 LATE, IN THE PICKUP AS WELL AS THE CHEVY S10--GMC VARIENT, BUT WITH BELT DRIVE PUMPS FOR NOISE REDUCTION, AND PROB COST ALSO, ALSO ISUZU USED THOSE ENGS IN VARIOUS SIZED TRUCKS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD , WHEN I WAS IN S. AFRICA I SAW A BUNCH OF THE C223 ENGS IN TRUCKS ALMOST THE SAME SIZE AS THE NOW CURRENT NPR SERIES , THEY WERE BEING USED AS IN TOWN DELIVERY TRUCKS , TALK ABOUT SLOW ,MAN , BUT THEY COULDNT, GO VERY FAST THERE ANYWAY , THE C223 WAS DISCONTINUED IN THE U.S. IN 87 ,AS A VEH, ENG BUT CONTINUED TO BE SOLD AS AN IND ENG AND STILL IS I BELIEVE , IN HP RATINGS STARTING AROUND 40 HP UP TO ABOUT 60-70 HP SOME OF THEM HAVE TURBOS AND SOME DON,T ON THE IND ENG THE TURBO ONLY RAISES THE OUT PUT ABOUT 10 HP, THERMO KING USED SO MANY OF THOSE ENGS THAT I HAVE SEEN COMPLETE CRATES FULL OF VLV LIFTERS , AND PISTONS AND OTHER SMALL REPAIR PARTS SHIPPED OUT TO THEIR ENG REPAIR FACILITES , AND THESE CRATES ARE 3FT X 5FT X2 FTDEEP AND THERE WOULD BE CRATE AFTER CRATE OF THESE PARTS, SO THER ARE AN AWFUL LOT OF THEM OUT THERE IN ALL KINDS OF CONFIGURATIONS AND APPLICATIONS AND YES THERE WAS A BUNCH OF THEM USED IN FISHING BOATS, ALSO , BUT THEY USUALLY HAD THE NAME OF THE ENG SUPPLIER ON THEM ON THE VLV CVR , STERLING WAS ONE AND ALSO GRAY MARINE, 2 OF THESE ENGS WOULD PUSH A PRETTY GOOD SIZE BOAT VERY ECONOMICALLY, WHERE THE WEIGHT WOULDN,T MATTER A GREAT DEAL , I HAVE SEEN THEM IN FORK LIFTS ALSO WHERE THEY ARE USE TO JUST DRIVE A LARGE HYDRAULIC PUMP, JERRY

Thanks for the response, guys. I had heard that they were used for reefer engines, but no one around here could confirm that they were actually the C223. You know what many people are like: "Oh yea, an Isuzu diesel. It was just like the one in your truck, Same as the Chevette. They're all the same little Isuzu diesel."
Yea, right.

As always, this forum is a healthy wealth of knowledge! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
