I have 143K miles on my truck. The front drivers side boot is torn and grease is coming out. I installed manual hubs at 75K and removed the ADD hubs. I don't offroad much but do go throught high water and mud a few times a year. Now the question: Do I just replace the boot (both?) or do I get a rebuilt CV axle and replace the whole thing since I have to remove it anyway? Should I do the ball joints as well? Thanks for your help...... My Truck

I redid the boots on mine and it was a greasy mess, if I had to redo it I would of just gotten the rebuilt cvs and put them in, also if you have the $$ this would be a great time to redo your ball joints/tie rod ends.

if you dont have the money for a new axle, repairing the axle isnt that hard...me and my brother did his after a branch punctured the boot..we replaced both the boots...it only took 2.5 hours...wouldnt take that long now after learning how

I found it much easier and faster to just replace the whole thing. Plus depending where you go you can get a lifetime warranty. I got one at Kragen for I think around $65 and they told me even if just one boot goes out again bring the wole thing back for a replacement. I couldnt resist Jed

I replaced that same boot on my old 4runner, it's cheaper to buy the boot and do it yourself, but easier to buy the whole rebuilt cv shaft assembly, about a $70 after returnining the core. Had to do that when one of the cv's exploded on a wheeling trip, now i've got a pickup with a solid front axel...

I was forced to bust loose the ball joints on my 92 3.0. There was no other way to possibly get that thing out. However, my buddy says he got his out without loosening the ball joints on his 89 22re. Id be interested to hear what you come across since we have the exact same truck.

You can get a boot kit with the grease for 30 bucks a side ( The Parts Bin.com ) And it is actually OEM stuff. I had to unbolt the lower Ball joint and disconnect the sway bar to get it out (before the ball joint spacers were installed).

It is far easier to just undo the top ball joint, everything then just tilts away from the vehicle. I know thge manuals don't call for this, but it is so much quicker and easier. If you don't, you spend a lot of time fighting with it trying to get it all back together. As 4crawler mentioned, now would be the time to switch the studs to bolts.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed
