I'm driving along today and out of nowhere white smoke starts to fill the cabin. It's coming from the dash around the speedo and Tach. I pull over in a parking spot and start looking for the Fire Ext in the back and the smoke stops. I quicky disconnect the batttery.

What the hell is in there that could cause a fire? Everything was still working when I turned it off. The top was very hot so I sat there a while and waited for it to cool down. I didn't want to leave the truck and come back to a burned out hulk. No blown fuses? Could the speedo cable cause this?

Gauge cluster electronics maybe? I doubt the speedo cable or you'd hear it.

I have no idea, but please be sure to post your findings on this one. What could happen to one '88 could happen to another.

Good luck Les...I hope it's quick, easy, and inexpensive to find/fix.

I have a spare 87 wiring harness for a manual tranny and a few other parts from the smoking area.

Thanks, I'll try to get it pulled tonight. I'm curious as to the damage. I'll take the digital cam so all can see

Body Damage is Cool
Blower resistor, blower motor, blower switch, all high currant draws to create a fire.

Check the gate lock switch. Mine self-destructed recently through my own stupidity, and there was certainly white smoke coming from the dash...

Need a Spot
In the absence of physical evidence, an area of possibility is the fuel gauge since it incorperates a constant voltage relay which reduces battery voltage to 7 volts for this guage and the water temperature guage. If this is a mechanical relay and the points fuse together, the coil might short and burn. If the relay is a solid state type and shorts, it typically smokes. Resistane values for the guage are given on page 8-124 of the 87 FSM. Hope the damage is minimal.

Good point.. Another place to look is the switch for the emergancy flashers, less likely to smoke but still trouble prone.
