Maximum lift and tire size? #650602 09/27/05 10:50 PM

I'm assembling a 79 CJ w/ a chevy small block stroker. Its come time to look at reassembly and I'm left to wonder just how high should I go? And just how tall should I go with the tires? I want to maximiz each component as I reassemble but I don't want to compromise performance and I know that too tall in lift or tires is not better. I don't know if it matters but I'm using a Ford 9" rear and Dana 44 front. Please help.

What type of terrain is your jeep going to be used in? What are your plans for it?

cj5 or cj7 that will go along ways in the info you receive,
plus did you do the install in the original mount location,
what tranny an transfer case combo are you using, drive-
shaft length will determine lift. Did you keep the factory
offset to the drivers side of the jeep for front drive-
shaft clearance, these are questions we need answered first.

Its a 79 CJ 7. Yes I did plan to maintain the drivers side offset. I've picked up a TH 350 w/ an NP 205 T case. At this point in time its nothing more than a frame on stands, a built stroker on the stand, and a tranny ready to go next to it. I'm also thinking of selling my tub and ordering an aluminum tub. But before I go any further its time to get the chassis rolling, so I can drop in the drivetrain. As for the terrain well anything goes but I'm in Michigan if thats any help. Its just intended to be an all around Jeep.

Check out rubicon express. I'd go with a 4.5" suspension lift and a 1" body lift and run 35's.

Ok not far off from what I thought might be ok. My next question then is do you mean spring over on the 4.5 lift or just a straight 4.5 lift. As for the tires I'd been wondering whether 35s or 36s would be better. But I wanted everyone elses opinions. This is the first time I've done a ground up Jeep. And should I really use a body lift or just cut out the fenders.

Well if you are good with fab work you can do a 4-5 inch spring over with the stock springs (keeps stock ride). A spring over flexes well, but is hard to set up. If you want a bolt on kit that works well, I suggest Rubicon Express. They have a 4.5" kit that flexes well, and is very complete. The 1" body lift should fit 35's. It might be a bit close at full stuff but for street and medium off-road 35's will fit well.

I was wondering about the spring over because I never hear about anyone doing a springover on lift springs. I found one article about a srping over on 2.5" lift springs w/ 36" meats. But is a spring over on lift springs too much?

SOA and lift springs is usually too much for a function jeep. I've seen street queens SOA with 4" lift springs. They look cool but are just too tall to be useful off road. Also jeeps are relatively short so with humongous spring lifts drive shaft angles become a serious problem. On all the hardcore rigs you usually see between 3-8" lift with lots of fender trimming.

I can see where the 4" and spring over would be overkill. I certainly don't want to loose stability. But would the 2" or 2.5" lift springs w/ spring over still be an overkill with the 36" meats. Or would I be better off with 4.5" to 5" lift springs and 1"-2" body lift to get the 36"s in. I figure I'm gonna be hoggin out the fenders no matter what. And was actually considering tubed rockcrawler fenders in the front. As for the body lift I can figure that later experimenting with hockey pucks before I mount the tub.
