i just got the updated intake plenum for my 95 sr and it was damaged. the purge valve, i think thats what it is; bolted to the side had been bent in not allowing the butterfly valves to close! well the part number is not cast but printed on the new one as is my old one. i could read this number VAC 748-001 from my old one just under the part number but the part number has been rubbed off. the new one reads the part number then VACV 48-002. how do i tell if my old one is actually an old one? they look exactly alike??? anyone???

I'll ask my Mitsu contact if he can ask one of their engineers.

My pleasure. It may take him a few days to get an answer though as he's not an engine designer/engineer.

Alternatively, maybe the dealer will let you order one to find out if yours is the old one or the new one?

Ok. I thought they might be made using same physical specs but different materials.

gotcha. what bothered me is that everyone said the updated would be cast with the part number but instead its only printed on, which plants a seed in my mind always wondering if the intake that came off was indeed updated...but the old intake had grooves inside where the butterfly valves hit...which just got me thinking maybe the updated intakes movement of the butterfly valves has been limited causing it not to make contact with the walls thus reducing risk of malfunction?.?.

Unless someone else updated the intake before you, ( very unlikely ) it is the older unit. I called my favorite mitzu part man. He ran my VIN and my 96 has the old unit. They updated to the new intake, without no freakin recall!!!! On the 1996.5 trucks. I got a 96 close but don't count.

the mitsu guy i talked to said he ships out 2 updated parts a week!!!why the heck is there not a recall? he also said the sport has the same intake, i did not know that! what does it take to have a recall??? should we all start sendings 3 letters a week or is any type of effort useless?
