Okay I think I've got the 4l30E auto transmission. Its a '96 Trooper SE. I'm in the middle of changing the filter and pan gaskets, but I can't get the the main pan bolts in the back. The crossmember that supports the trans. is in the way. Do I have to support the trans and remove the crossmember? Please let me know ASAP.

Yes, you do have to remove the crossmember after you've *securely* supported the tranny.
I recently did this job on my Trooper (both of the pans) and it was the single worst automotive repair/maintenance experience I've ever had. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
I'm seriously considering swapping to a manual tranny.

Yeah I know what you meen. I supported it by the T/C and it is holding up thus far. I got both pans off (thanks to some help from my dad). Now i'm taking a break and cleaning all of the old gasket off the pans. I noticed some gasket sealer on the main pan. Should I put some of this on with the new gasket? I want to do it right so I don't have to do it again.

Body Damage is Cool
PUT JUST ENOUGH SEALER ON THE PAN TO HOLD IT IN PLACE UNTILL YOU GE TTHE PAN BOLTED UP, YOU DON,T WANT ANY OF THE SEALER TO GET INTO THE TRANS OIL, AND DON,T OVERTIGHTEN THE BOLTS OR YOU WILL CRUSH THE GASKET AND IT CAN LEAK, ABOUT 7 FT LBS OR 85B INCH POUNDS IF YOU HAVE AN INCH LB WRENCH, JERRY
