You're supposed to try and rotate the engine over with the belt STILL WRAPPED and installed on the engine. If your rotating the crankshaft only with the Tbelt off, surely your going to run into an open intake/exhaust valve which will stop the rotation. No offense meant but my 1st suggestion is to get another mechanic friend.

Unfortunately, the FSM has an error in this regard. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I dunno if that same error has made it into the 3rd party service manuals.
