Clay if the vehicle passes... What does it cost the owner? I think I just paid $18 for my 04 Chevy.

Last time I smogged my jeep (enhanced smog zone which means dyno at 25 MPH...) it cost around 50 ish dollars. What really sucks is 2 weeks after that I could have had it smoged for free at school <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> ... Oh well. How much does it cost to register your truck? Here that truck would be something like 100$ or more.

That same 04 H/D Chevy is around $60. a year. All we get is a sticker for the windshield. Was a time we got new metal plates every year.
I noticed some new tags recently. They are not even stamped! Just flat with some numbers and letters painted on the flat white surface.
I have a vanity plate (costs extra $40.) says "native Texan"

The shop I work at charges $69.95 for the test and the state charges an additional $8.25 for the certificate.

Other shops charge more or less, depending. We charge $10 more for vans because they suck <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" />

Then you get to pay for your registration. I think an 04 Silverado would probably cost around $850 per year to register, but it might only be half that.

Both of my current cars cost $59 per year to register because they're old junk.

If it cost that much around here there would be a LOT of Louisiana and Oklahoma plates running around. WE would not stand for that kind of pricing..period!

it 21 dollars in new york to get it inspected. as for the reg...it's with the insurance, i think..i'm kind of new to ny..i think its kind of screwy how they do it up here...i think mass. is up to 40 bucks for there inspection if i recall correctly..its been a few years...

2,688,418 in Kansas according to the 2000 census. You rank one notch below Mississippi @ 2,844,658. Our State inspection is a joke, Often you just give up the 5 bucks and get a sticker. Sometimes they actually go through the motions, depending where you go, apparently anyone can be an inspector. The big new thing here is window tint, Of all things to enforce! Big Jim, if the changes go like it went when Galveston County went to emissions checks, get ready for some changes.
This year, when I went to get the Jeep inspected, it didn't pass the emissions test - high NOx at high speed (they put the vehicle on a set of rollers to check the exhaust at different engine speeds - under load, idle etc.).
The station directed me to a State of Texas website (I don't remember it offhand, but I can pull the paperwork if anybody needs to know). It states that all vehicles from 2 years old to 24 years old will have to pass an emissions test to get an inspection sticker. The older the vehicle, the less stringent the requirements. They will reimburse the cost of repairs to emissions equipment up to $1000, or pay you about $700 to have the vehicle destroyed (I can't remember the exact dollar amounts, but I'm close).
I had removed the computer and associated wiring, sensors, etc., installed a pre-computer BBD carb, and installed an HEI distributor prior to inspection (basically all I left was the PCV and EGR systems) so I was worried it wouldn't pass. The inspector OK'ed the visual check, but was a stickler for the sniffer(probably has no choice. But, the only problem was high NOx, caused by a stuck EGR valve. I lubed the valve stem and replaced the old hose - it passed the reinspection with flying colors.
We used to have little hole-in-the-wall inspection places that would pass anything you could drive in, but apparently the cost of the testing equipment, and the fact of them having the test results calculated and results recorded on computer drove most of them out of business. And , you have to have the vehicle inspected in the county your address is in, showing on your drivers license! I tried to get it inspected in an adjacent county, but they wouldn't do it.
Oh yeah, it costs around 45 bucks for an inspection now.

I do agree that the price is ludicrous, it doesn't cost 10 bucks a car to catalog and register one. It's just another way to tax us. Notice how the expensive cars get heavier taxed? ItÆs not a linear curveà
