I've got a '95 Sportage with SOHC, it has 197K on it. Just in the last few days I've been noticing excessive valve clatter when I start it. Is there anything I should look at about this?

Mine is a DOCH so I dont know if it applys....
Mine does that all the time for 2-3 sec in the morning, if it goes on that means thet my oil level is low, verified it many many times

Mine does the same thing. Checked with my friend, a long time Japanese engine mechanic and he told me to use thin oil to allow to raise with more ease and use Meta Lube, but I have not seen this item in the stores. He says it's not the valves, but the lifters which have a very narrow opening and becomes a little loose with time and use. He says it's no big deal unless I want to do a head job, I should just let it be until it really needs fixing.

Out of interest, genuine or aftermarket oil filter?
I have heard from other ppl and forums that some aftermarket filters do not have a one way valve in them, allowing the oil to drain back into the sump when left standing. This means ther is a couple of seconds until the oil pump actually has any oil to pump (at full pressure), leaving the top end of your engine a bit noisy and underlubricated. This could well be exaggerated in an old engine and may be indicative of an oil pump that needs servicing.

Yes, some filters do not hold the oil in. I have used FRAM for many years and if I'm not mistaken, it does hold the oil in or at least that's how it looks like when I try to drain it and nothing comes out, and still I get the clattering. I tried Slick 50 and another additive 'cause they said it clings on the the metal parts, but the problem was not solved.

Hayhauler, I own a 1995 SOHC and I found out these motors need their valves adjusted. Have you ever had them adjusted ?? Mine were out so bad the car was skipping and lost a lot of power!! You can do this yourself, it took me a little over 1 hr the first time. Good Luck ! Dondobe

It would need adjustment if it clattered constantly, but it's only in the morning for about 3 seconds. I think it's just a little wear and tear.

The clatter is only on start up, lasts for around 30 seconds. It doesn't have to have been sitting all night. An hour will do it, but it won't be a problem after a ten minute stop for gas.

try using a thinner oil 5w30 or 10w30. its just the lifters not holding pressure. my truck started to do that after i put in 20w50. another cause is being a little low in oil.
